Why lock the "kill gays" thread?

Quote  |  Reply

I’m a bit curious why the “kill gays” thread got locked.

A few people were against volt and moved away from the topic, but the thread had moved beyond that and everyone had said what they wanted to say to her (and the more offensive posts were deleted). Locking it for that reason is like putting on a seatbelt after you have the crash…no point.

An explanation would be fitting. The reason this is not a private message to a mod is because the explanation isn’t only deserving to me but to the others who were actually using the thread.

I suspect the reason was simply because it is a charged topic. It would be sad if we can not speak about such an important issue our modern day society is actively facing… though, I guess it’s easier to just ignore it (Sorry gay people, guess you have to suck it up and deal with society labeling you immoral sick creatures).

Holy cow, if we locked every "charged" topic in the lounge, we'd spend all day doing that...

No -- it was locked because it was so far off-topic as to no longer represented the original post (yours....).

I have no problem with the subject matter, nor a CIVIL discussion about it; however, the talk had once again veered off course -- with the ultimate results clear.  When a thread becomes unduly disruptive it not only creates more work for mods and administrators (I know, I know -- stop with the waaaahhhh), but it also creates an atmosphere counter to what CC would like to project -- that is one where everyone is welcome to project their opinion without being berated and or degraded.

Talk is good, civil discussions are great, arguments and "cyber-bullying" are not.

lorik, put the stick down and stop poking things.

Same with threads that change direction in what they are talking about (happens allll the time). It's like a conversation in real life, it drifts from one issue to another related one (until someone brings it around again and wants to respond to the more related topics). I don't know why that's a bad thing... threads are short-lived anyway, it might have lived another day on its own and then sank into forum-land.

The last thing the thread was talking about was an innocent exchange on how you can't say "yes" or "no" for the existence of god.

But then life would be boring! *shakes bee-hive*

hang on a SECOND, for a start, plenty of threads go wildly off topic in this place, and secondly, where was this so called cyber bullying? Forgive people for being passionate, if your going to throw your unpopular opinions into the ring you'd better be prepared to defend em. It wasn't out of hand name calling really was it? It was still intelligent and impassioned discussion. I'm kind of disapointed in C-C. I'm probably not the only one.

Locking a thread for going off topic should only be done if the OP requests it to be. A bit ridiculous...

 i agree.

Wonders why every thread she has ever started hasn't been locked for this reason because not one of them is ever on topic.

Guess you must be special lorik..

That's exactly what it boils down to. It's only certain people who's threads get locked for "going off topic".

Yay mods!

 You're not.

While I find the conspiracy theory of "Poster Profiling" a bit far-fetched, I must admit that I find the rationale for locking the thread a little on the flimsy side.

It's a rare thread indeed that doesn't go off on a tangent, and that's often where some of the most worthwhile discussions occur.  If anyone should have been offended by the topic and ensuing discussion, it should have been me.  After all, my sexual orientation was compared to beastiality and alcoholism!

Instead, I took advantage of the opportunity to share some information that might not be evident from a non-gay perspective, and based on the feedback, it was appreciated.  Locking the thread prevents others from making similar contributions to the discussion and effectively stifles the communication and education process required to address the rampant misinformation surrounding the topic.  Yes, in all liklihood the atmosphere would become charged and tempers might flare, but as they say, "no pain, no gain".

Having said that, I of course respect the Mods and appreciate the time and effort they invest to keep this site on track - it's not a job I'd be willing to take.

Split

Who said anything about poster profiling? There are a few members here who's threads seem to get locked way faster than anyone else.

What part of this was unclear?  There are circumstances in which threads get locked or deleted.  Sometimes for direct violations of the posting guidelines and other times because the thread requires too much attention from the moderators.

Fair or unfair, it happens.  If you want a free from moderation site, start your own.  You can also use your journal and moderate it yourself.

I was wondering why that thread got locked too. Was it really that off topic? I've seen threads get way more off track and not get locked...

Off topic and requiring mod attention/intervention is a sure fire forumula to get locked.

I don't think it was only that, my guess that+people reporting is what got it locked in the first place.

CC seems to have gained a small group of tittle tattles! which is sad quite frankly. I have had some absolutely great debates on here and yes sometimes it's got messy but, who cares it keeps things alive.

Just because you don't agree with a point of view doesn't mean you have to report it, it'll get that people will just stop for fear of being reported.
