Loggin Sushi Rolls + dealing with friends....

Quote  |  Reply

Hi, I went to a sushi restaurant for lunch today and ordered a california roll with salmon substituted for crab (no crab, only salmon)... I have no idea how to log this, does anyone have any suggestions?

I wanted to avoid the sushi restaurant because of this, but the pressure is tough and constantly telling people "I'm dieting" or "I can't eat that" gets really annoying. Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this? How can I get people to understand that I can't eat the same way that I used to - it's not just a diet, it's a change.. am I going to have to constantly remind people?

I'd really appreciate any support or advice, thanks! =)

There is an item in the CC+ database called 'average' sushi - I'm pretty sure there is one for small roll maki, medium roll maki and large roll maki (with dimensions mentioned in the item). Here is the link to the medium rolls. (So you would log 8 pieces if you ate a whole roll?)

Also, regarding your friends and colleagues, do you really need to say things like dieting and 'can't eat that', could you instead try saying things like I don't feel like eating out, fatty foods make me feel unwell, I brought my lunch, I'm in the mood for something light, I don't feel like a brownie right now? etc.... I think if you draw attention to your dieting, people react funny - maybe trying to see if you will fail, or maybe they are jealous they don't have your willpower!

Maybe try to estimate how much of a serving you had of each ingredient?  But it's probably easier to do what the person above mentioned.  Good thing sushi isn't bad for you, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Maybe offer to have dinner at your house with friends?  Or suggest a place to eat that you can log with ease.  Or just say "no" :p

Sorry I can't help you with your acquaintances constant questioning but I have a little bit of info on Sushi. I love it by the way :)

A California roll with crab, avocado, and  cucumber, eight pieces about 300 cal. I don't know how many more calories salmon would be instead. Unless it was smoked I can't imagine that many more. If you didn't dip it into soy sauce or wasabi this is a pretty healthy lunch.

I think that a lot of people like to have someone to share their guilty pleasures with.  So, when someone brings sweets to the office and you say that you're dieting, a lot of people will say things like "oh, well this is diet cake".  I find that instead of telling people I'm dieting, it works better to just say "no, thank you" or "oh, I just ate so I'm too full right now".  If you're polite, it helps.  I think that people also feel offended if you say no because you're dieting, because then they feel like maybe they shouldn't be eating it either.  As far as eating out goes, I think suggesting a place is a good idea.  Or maybe suggest that everyone brings their lunch to a local park or someplace nearby to eat together instead of eating at a restaurant.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I am trying to find ways to say no without drawing attention to the fact that I'm "dieting"... I don't even want to think of it as dieting, just as not eating waaaay too much anymore and being more careful with what I do eat. I just don't know how to explain this to anyone without causing a weird situation. I will try just the old "no thanks", but it's tough since my old nickname used to be "hollow leg"... the joke was that I ate so much until it filled my 'hollow leg'... I was actually thin when this nickname developed so it wasn't mean. But since hitting the late 20's and now 30, my metabolism ain't what it used to be and the hollow leg syndrome has caught up with me.

ANyway, thanks for the advice and the link! big help! =)

That is awesome, thank you so much for the reply, it makes good sense and is really helpful to me.

There are some great suggestions out there for the friend portion of this.  But if you love sushi (I sure do!), there are some other things you could try when you're there.  California rolls aren't really that bad, but I've found that I love vegetable rolls, they're all veg. & mushroom, it doesn't have any sauce mixed in it, and it's delicious!  There's the fitness roll, which is the same as veg. only with a little lemon.  Kappa has just cucumber and are one of my favorites.

I love to have a small bowl of miso soup.  There's not that much to it, and it helps to fill me up.  I like to order green tea~it really helps fill me up and satisfies me, so I'm not tempted to have soda.  The sobas & soups aren't too bad, you just have to watch out for the sodium content.

Or maybe you could host a sushi making party~lots of fun & you can put what you want into the rolls! :P

I'm starting to really enjoy sushi, and I find that brown rice instead of white rice is an easy way to control carbs & up the fiber. Also I tend to feel better just eating sushimi (just the fish raw)... so maybe that'll help you out when dieting while eating out???
