Logging the elliptical as running... is this okay?
because i push myself really hard on the precore elliptical at my gym, i can get in from 7-9 miles per hour in each session. this is significantly more calories than putting elliptical vigorus effort. i even have it at a 5-7 resistance! but would i be over judging if i was to log the excercise as running at ___ mph for ___ time?
anyone?
The elliptical isn't the same as running, though it's closer than anything else I've tried. I'd say either use the calorie counter on the machine and enter it manually, or to be even more accurate, get one of those heart rate meters that calculates calorie burn and enter that number manually.
thanks. the count on the machine when i enter weight/height is almost exactly the same as when i enter running.
Anyone else?
Hey I would suggest a heart rate monitor, generally elliptical machines inflate caloric burn.
When I used the ellyptical I didn't log it as running as it is a bit slower I would think less harsh on the knees but if that is what you would like to do I guess it is o.k. I would not because I would be afraid I would not loose what I thought I would. Running really burns a lot of calories in a shorter distance. What is your distance and what level are you at. I have seen people on the ellyptical that went so fast they should have been running.
I set it to level 7, and did 10 miles in an hour.
If you're pushing really hard, then you're burning more calories than the standard amount listed on this site. HOWEVER, the elliptical is no substitute for running because the pedals are assisting you on the way up. Running burns way more calories because you are forced to push your whole body weight with each step (it's called a 'weight bearing exercise')
