Is it sugar free gum? Generally, a piece of sugar free gum is about 5 cals which is pretty insignificant unless you chew, say 5 or more pieces in a day.
However, I would avoid foods that list 3 net carbs because they have 40 sugar alch.
joe
I do
i think that worrying about the calories in gum should be added to the DSM as a symptom of eating disorders. and i hate the DSM and i don't entirely believe that eating disorders are a disease.
I log gum. lol Heck.. I even log SPICES. Despite popular belief, they DO have calories. Check it out on calorieking.com. You can look up cinnamon. And careful with other flavorings like vanilla extract.

If you're logging gum, spices and vanilla extract you have a major problem....
No kidding.
I would only log gum if I chewed like 2 packs a day. Which I don't think has happened yet. ![]()
haha. yea i would feel psycho if i logged gum but i have actually met ppl who do (in my sorority -- no surprise--
I log gum, but I usually just put 30cal down and call it good for the day. I do not log spices.
I log everything. If it has calories then I log it. Gum, vitamins, emergen-c. Man, all that stuff adds up sometimes to like 50 calories or more. I don't add each individual peice of gum but I will estimate what I think I will have for that day and log that.

what is it that you think eating disorders are than? i'm really just curious, not like attacking you. I am just interested in your opinion, because I have never really heard that stance taken before.
laren, i'm still researching and forming my opinions on this, but i tend to think that disordered eating, most of the time, is just that. i think the researchers at the Karolinska Institute (the Stockholm Solution) are on the right track; that the psychiatric symptoms are the result of malnourishment and starvation, not the cause.
i think that disordered eating behaviours are habits, and that like other habits, they can become so automatic that they seem to take on a life of their own.
mostly, i think that the medical models (of addiction, of eating disorders, etc) are far too limited. they don't promote prevention and early intervention; they see only one method of treatment; and they pathologize and stigmatize people. the medical model of eating disorders encourages women (mostly) to maintain a level of health that is just a sliver better than dying - because dying is when you're likely to get institutionalized. and if you can maintain not dying long enough, they'll tell you you're well.
that's really interesting. good luck!
pgeorgian, I really want to read your thesis when you're done. Or at least the plain english synopsis.
Logging gum/celery/anything under 10 calories seems ridiculous to me. That or obsessive. 5 calories or even 50 calories if you're attempting to lose weight in a healthy manner is not going to have a major impact.
Basically if you eat enough of the low cal items, log them as a group or just let them fall within your discretionary calories for the day. Trying to get an excact calorie count for any given day is impossible, even using packaged foods as there is a certain margin of error intrinsic to any measuring system.
I wouldn't log gum, but I log vegetables because even if they don't have many calories, the nutrients affect my overall nutritional grade on CC.
I actually do add gum into my log. I tend to chew two pieces at a time and will chew up to 6 pieces a day. (30 calories right there.) I mean if it wasn't accountable why would it be in the CC database? Eh, I just choose to add it in.

so rude to say!
nice edit, candi. i think your first post was more honest. not more rational or more sensical, but more honest.
you didn't get to be overweight because of gum, and you're probably not going to get to a healthy weight because you start counting it.
