How long will I feel hungry?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm starting up cutting calories again, but it's very hard for me to do it for too long because I get so hungry. My calorie goal is 1,400. How many days does it take for the body to adjust to less food and stop feeling so hungry?

Thanks,
Steph

It depends on what you are eating to get to 1400. If you eat 5 candy bars a day to get to your goal calories, you will be hungry forever. If you are filling up on whole, natural foods (lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains) it shouldn't take long to get used to the way of eating.

I was you 2 weeks ago!  My target range is 1200 - 1400 calories per day.  I started about 3 weeks ago focusing on this goal and the first week and a half I was so hungry!  All I could think about was food!  What worked for me was changing my attitude toward "meal times." Initally I changed to making each meal lighter, breakfast, lunch and dinner so between each meal I was so hungry!  What has worked for me is eating when I'm hungry but eating muchhealthier.  Breakfast and lunch are no longer events.  I eat a light, healthy breakfast and lunch that make me feel full, but not stuffed like they did before.  This allows extra calories available for healthy snacks.  I seriously eat all day long - my assistant teases me because every couple hours I leave my office and head to the kitchen for a snack - but all healthy snacks.  Here is typically what I eat.

8 am - 1 cup high fiber cereal with 1/2 cup skim milk

10 am - 2 hard boiled eggs - whites only

12 pm - a few (2 or 3) slices of turkey and cottage cheese, sometimes a side salad or veggie too if I'm feeling hungry (no dressing or butter)

2 pm - apple or baby carrots

4 pm - Special K bar, or 2 rice cakes with peanut butter

6 pm - Dinner is still a bit of an event because it's time for my husband and I to share together - 5 oz. lean meat such as chicken or fish, grilled or broiled (no butter or oil), whole grain (brown or wild) rice steamed (no butter), grilled or steamed veggie

8 pm - apple or yogurt or if I'm feeling extra naughty 100 calorie slim-a-bear ice cream sandwich

Also, I always keep healthy snacks in my desk if I need an extra snack - things like a pria bar, a special K bar, rice cakes, carrots, etc.

This is what worked best for me, I don't function if I'm hungry.

Thank you kodischild and milwaukeegal!

I have been drinking metamucil 1 serving in the morning with 1 cup of water, and this holds me over until lunch, it keeps me fuller loner.  I find that the pills don't have the same effect, and the cookies linger around in my mouth for too long. I keep three cold waters in the fridge at work, and drink at least one bottle before lunch.  I've heard cold water actually helps burn more calories, don't know if it's true, but the metamucil and the watter keep me fuller longer.  Oh one more thing don't buy the generic, metamucil, it doesn't disolve at all and it's like drinking water with pouder chunks.  Invest in the real thin.  Its worth it.  Hope this helps.

it burns more calories because it takes energy for your body to heat it up and keep you warm. i dont think its a significant calorie burn tho. prolly about like eating celery.
