Could I Just have long fingers? (Body Frame Question)

Quote  |  Reply

My fingers overlap but not by much. However at 5'9", despite being pretty heavy right now (190) when I was 140lbs (maybe less maybe more) a few years ago I remember being pretty skin and bones. I didn't work out much but my hips stuck out and it hurt my butt to sit through class. Not to mention if I worked on my stomach it probably would have been flat. It practically was.

Wouldn't that indicate that I have a heavier frame?

My hands don't even fit in XL womans gloves because my fingers are too long. But I've always attributed that to my height.

I did competative swimming for a great number of years. So my shoulders used to be too wide to fit into girls clothes. Sports injuries stopped the serious sports, but my shoulders are still wider than my hips, but not by much, even with all this extra fat.

My sister is a small frame, and I'm pretty sure I could never be as narrow or skinny looking as she is. And would probably look like death if she weighed as much as she did. Any imput would be greatly appreciated!

Once you get below that BMI of 25 or so (about 165lbs in your case) then it's largely down to you where you think you fit best.   Frame-size is tough to measure objectively and the finger-wrapping test obviously has its limitations!  140lbs (BMI 21) is obviously too low from what you say, so aim for 165lbs and take a rain-check when you get there.  Good luck

I had the same question! I'm tall too, and I've got long fingers, which overlap around my wrist--but there's NO WAY I have a small frame. So I found this website: http://www.am-i-fat.com/body_frame_size.html

You can measure your wrist and elbow width to determine your frame size. With the "finger test" I'm a small frame, but using actual measurements I'm between medium and large.

Thank you both for the useful feedback! I bookmarked that page until I can find a tape measure or some string. Albeit the elbow part sort of confuses me.

I've decided once I hit 180-185 to take a picture every 10lbs lost to try and help me determine when a good stopping point is. I can't tell unless I have pictures to compare to.

165 seems like a good point for me to start getting cautious. And while I'm aiming 140 at the moment (which was obviously too low) its mostly so I feel like I have a lot of work left to do and don't slack off. 165 From what I remember I felt a little chunky still so I think 155 or so might be good. And I'll be exercising this time around too!

Thank you so much for your help. This has been bothering me for forever!

I have a teeny tiny frame, but my fingertips just barely touch. I know I have small hands. So what you're saying is definitely possible.

My results:

  • Finger test = medium frame
  • Wrist measurement = small frame
  • Elbow breadth = large frame

I give up!
