How long for the new prez's honeymoon?

Quote  |  Reply

Any guesses on when the new prez's followers will float back down to earth?

I hope we can do better at being engaged citizens. :)

I think its safe to say that I'm hopeful, but there's a difference between being floating with hope and floating with illusionistic expectations. I also agree with an earlier poster about the change of president bringing me out of the deep, murky pit that our former president managed to shove me and the rest of our economy into.

Either he's actually a decent actor, or he is honestly trying to make changes. I personally believe the latter. And its not as if he's holding himself up on a magical pedestal through which all our problems will dissapear. Even in his speeches he says it will be hard, and will require a change of actions amongst ourselves, the people of this nation, to follow through for our own good.

A window of 2 years to fulfill all  of his promises according to that poll I honestly think is a short period of time if people are expecting things to be hunky-dory by then. I would like to see improvements by then though.

There's my $.02.

My guess is that his honeymoon (as it's traditionally used) will be extremely short. As much as he's tried to temper it, there are a majority of people with the expectation that he's going to fix everything in short order.

They will be sorely disappointed.

However, I honestly have never been more pleased with the result of a President for whom I did not vote.

The few things he's had the opportunity to do so far have been, on the whole (f'n rohm emanuel... /facepalm), moves in the right direction imho: A cabinet that I don't feel uncomfortable with, actively engaging the conservatives, and halting gitmo trials for a policy review.

::Bob Dole would have been a great President::

I'm happy there's not a Bush or Clinton in office....I realized yesterday that one of those families has been in office for the last 20 years, most of my life. This country is a republic, right? :/ It's good to get some new blood in the governement.

I don't think Obama is going to make the US the next Utopia, and I don't think he is a god that is the answer to everyone's prayers....obviously it would be silly to think that he and he alone is going to solve all our problems.

Never should a citizen look at a polititian through rose colored glasses, it is our duty to scrutinize and judge all that they do in their role...as we should and will do with Obama.

With that said, I am excited about his office and am looking forward to seeing what the next 4 yrs will bring...and I will be watching and deciding which way my vote will go 4 yrs from now :)

ignayshus, you said something(if I remember right) before the election when the discussion was about obama's experience or lack thereof, about it could go basically 2 different directions either he will grow into the presidency or he will flounder.  I watched his speech carefully last night, and my god, this guy really is developing into presidential material.  I only hope it continues and the country positively benefits from it.

yeah, ak.  'cause obama was a real blithering idiot three months ago.

I like what they've done with whitehouse.gov so far - particularly the Briefing Room

Well, pg, he didn't look so presidential against hilary early on.

How many US Presidents before Obama have been lefties?  (By that I mean left handed.)

akgal, if your opinion has changed, it's okay to say, "My opinion has changed."  you don't have to pretend that the man has changed.  he hasn't.

interesting.

he looked and sounded more presidential to me than she did

but it's really fascinating how we can see the same thing and perceive it so differently  Smile

Pg, been to college don't need to be schooled, thank you....the man has improved and is growing into the position - still don't think he is there yet but time will tell.

I think I remember Clinton being a lefty.

Since I have google I also have the answer:

  • 20th James A. Garfield
  • 31st Herbert Hoover
  • 33rd Harry S. Truman
  • 38th Gerald Ford
  • 40th Ronald Reagan
  • 41st George H.W. Bush
  • 42nd William J. Clinton
  • 44th Barack H. Obama
  • All left handers.

I just looked it up too. Interesting that Clinton was the 3rd straight lefty in a row. So we have 8 out of 44, so almost 1/4.

funny.  so 47 years of life experience, university, law school, and all his political and community involvement weren't enough to get him ready, but somehow the past few months have magically got him "almost there"?  i guess he learned a lot while he was campaigning, huh?  from good republicans like you?

John McCain is also left handed. Only about 10% of americans are.

probably more, if you consider that many of them would have been forced to make the switch up until--what--the 50s?

[aside: i spoke with a woman just the other day who's only a few years older than me and was forced to use her right hand.  now she's starting to use both (she's a visual artist), and it's bringing up trauma symptoms from residential school.]
