Ok, so I am new to this calorie count thing. And I started it because I've been having digestive problems for over a year now causing me to lose a lot of weight. I am 5'2" and weighed 125 lbs then, now I weigh 93 lbs now. Before I was sick I hardly ate anything healthy. So now, I am trying to eat much healthier due to the affects of sugar and fat on my sensitive stomach and work my way back up to 105 or so. My problem is that I can't eat enough of the good healthy stuff during the day to add up enough calories. I end up with a total of 500 to 600 calories at the end of the day! Any suggestions on how to get a good amount of calories with a low sugar and low fat diet?
Umm yeah. Eat breads, pasta, meat, nuts, etc along with veggies and fruits. Pretty simple, really.
That's tough. My mom has IBS, gallbladder problems and a host of newly discovered allergies that make it really tough for her to eat enough. I think it helps to eat smaller amounts more often. Lots of rice, lentils, fish for staple meals and lots of salads (fruit, lettuce, potato, bean, etc.) and fruits on the side and throughout the day.
Did you find out what's causing your digestive problems?
Smaller amounts has been helping me! Because I can't eat a lot at a time. And I did find out! It's stress-related. But I spent so long with such a limited diet it developed more than it should have. Thanks!
Actually ... have you been tested for gluten sensitivity? I had the same problem about 4 years ago and as soon as I eliminated wheat gluten (wheat, barley, oats, rye) I have been symptom free.
I can't provide you with any advice, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your struggle. I was just thinking about how it's been a year since I got sick and still haven't figured out exactly what's going on with my stomach. I lost a signficant amount of weight (about 30lbs) from Sept of last year until February of this year. For a while I was only eating once or twice a day just to avoid stomach pain. I've been tested for food intolerances and have made the suggested dietary changes but that's only helped a little. The main thing that gets me through the day right now is acceptance that I am going to be in pain and have unpleasant symptoms after eating and figuring out ways to cope with the pain. Also I did some food elimination that helped me pinpoint some other foods that were causing me pain (like high fiber foods, peanuts, corn, etc.). Using this strategy I've been able to eat on a regular basis and gain a couple of pounds but no where near where I need to be. I have some hope of getting answers soon about why I'm in so much pain....I have a GI specialist appt in a couple of weeks. Best of luck to you in your search for answers.
