Why do I look fatter now at the same weight?
Asked by ettisen on Sep 24, 2008 in Weight Maintenance

I have gained and lost weight a few times in the past. Since then, I have had my two sons. My concern is, it seems to me, that I look fatter now at the same weight I was in the past. Is that possible?

Answer

You could have more body fat now. When you lost weight through yo-yo dieting, you lost muscle along fat, but when you regained weight, unless you were weight-training, you gained mostly fat. And so now you weigh the same as before, but your body fat has increased. Even worse, because fat burns fewer calories than muscle does, you need to eat fewer calories just to maintain your old weight! Reverse the process by burning fat through cardio-type exercise and building muscle through weight-training. You might not end up weighing less but you’ll look trim and get to eat more.
