Do you ever look at other people`s food choices and just think..
.."I can`t believe that was me not so long ago!"
This obese lady in front of me at the supermarket today was buying a large chocolate coconut cake. First two ingredients: sugar, hydrogenated vegetable fat.
UGH. >_< I would have totally bought something like that myself, only because it looked good. Probably would have finished it in a day or two also.
If you have any "I can`t believe that used to be me" moments, please do share.
I haven't bought junk food in about 8 years and never intend on starting again.... but I will admit I sometimes look at people's grocery carts... and quickly scream in my head at how unhealthy some people eat! I remember this one person had an entire cart full of PORK RIBS... I am pretty sure (and hoping) that she was throwing a party... but I mean AN ENTIRE GROCERY CART FULL of pork ribs! She probably BOUGHT the store out and even asked a clerk to get more from the back! ha ha! Then I see people who are "trying" to be healthy but they think healthy is low fat products, etc! It sort of drives me crazy, but I keep to myself and just know that what I am buying is good for my body & mind! :) I would love to give other people advice, but sometimes I just don't think that's my place. .
To answer the original question rather than cart-bashing others, I guess I would share this "I can't believe that used to be me":
When looking at pictures of myself from 5 years ago. I was pushing 350 lbs, my mouth often smiling but my eyes are sad, I am dressed in schmoey big-girl clothes that are all that's available at that size. I am with a boyfriend who made me miserable and I didn't know how to get out of it. I am lost. I can't believe that used to be me.
Last week I went to the market to pick up a few things and I asked my husband if he needed anything. He said, DING DONGS! So I went to the store and loaded up on my normal "healthy" staples. Skipped the dessert isle altogether.
When I got home he asked about the ding dongs and I told him that they were completely out of them at the market. Must have been on sale or something.
Think I will go to hell for lying to my spouse? Perhaps, but at least it is better than having the temptation of a full box of ding dongs in my house.
And yes, I am completely guilty of checking out other people's purchases at the supermarket. And yes, until last year, I was that unhealthy shopper with the cart full of ding dongs.
Oh god. People actually look at my cart.
Okay, about 2 months ago (before I decided that being fat was not my destiny), I went to Walmart and bought 3 extra large chocolate bars on my lunch hour at work. Then I ate them secretly at my desk when no one else was around. However, usually when I go grocery shopping on the weekend, you'd think that I was a health food nut when looking at my cart. Veggies, fruits, lean meats and my kids happily munching on blueberries while I shopped. I NEVER eat crappy food in front of my kids and they are only allowed a small amount of sweets. There is still tons of Halloween candy from last year. The point is, sometimes the "cart" is deceptive. When I'm looking at what others have bought at the checkout, sometimes I notice something that I would like to buy next time, not looking for junk food to see how badly others eat.
Thank god I'm not buying chocolate bars anymore. I can't imagine what people were thinking of me...oh ya, "she must be on the rag..." Too bad I've had a hysterectomy :)
I don't really care what the person in front of me is buying. Having said that, I still love all the bad stuff. I miss Viva Puff cookies, Big Macs, Sweet Marie chocolate bars and raisin bread. I don't buy it any more, but I'd like to.
I have looked and I've had others look at mine.
I guess I should clarify here that I am referring to the groceries in the cart. ![]()
I don't think it's a big deal unless you were to shout at the top of your lungs "Oh my god, are you seriously going to eat that??" This I think would be pushing the limits of good judgement. Personally, I buy lots of organic and clean, healthy foods, and then there's the "junky" stuff my kid wants......people probably think I have multiple personalities.
katonick: Have you tried Ezekiel's Cinnamon Raisin English Muffins? They're clean, and very tasty, I would definitely recommend toasting them tho'.

Thanks Sticksandberries~
So people are judging me on what I buy at the grocery store? Great.
To answer the question, no I don't not look at other people's carts unless I'm trying to pick a line that will be the fastest. Even then I'm not paying attention to what foods they buy I'm merely looking at the volume of food in their carts.
I have had a checker comment on my purchases before. Most recently someone asked "what do you do with those" in reference to 5lbs of beef liver, 5lbs of pork kidney, 2lbs of beef heart, and 1 pack of chicken hearts and gizzards. "They're for my dog," I replied. The woman looked relieved.
In the theme of: .."I can`t believe that was me not so long ago!"
I took my nieces to Cheesecake Factory last weekend to celebrate one of my nieces birthdays. Since it's difficult to find nutritional information for Cheesecake Factory I had to guesstimate and came up with over 1,000 calories for the meal! That was my cheat day for the week, but I enjoyed it.![]()
I used to go out to lunch to places like that all the time, without ever realizing how many calories were in the food they served. Now I bring my lunch to work most days, and when I go out to eat I often look for nutritional information on-line before I go, and try to stick to the low calorie items.
