I wanna make a smoothie for breakfast and I don't wanna use yogurt, frozen yogurt, soy milk or tofu.

I found this recipe in the database, but spinach? Anybody tried one like that?

If I use frozen berries, a banana, and protein powder, you think it will work if I just sub some light cranberry juice or something instead of the milk or yogurt? Should I use extra frozen berries to compensate and make it thicker?

I freeze a combo of banana, mangoes, and pineapple and blend it with coconut milk and a little water(if you want to serve it as a coctail use coconut rum instead of water).  It's very creamy and very good.
that sounds delicious!

do you use canned coconut milk? like you use in thai food?
I use canned lite coconut milk, like for Thai food.

It's  a 1/2 cup for 2 enormous smoothies (or 4 regular size ones) and about a 1/2 cup of water/rum.
since I'm going to have this for breakfast... maybe will save the rum recipe for another occasion!  =)

sounds great though... I keep coconut milk in my pantry and I have some frozen fruit, so I can try this tomorrow morning

Yay! Coconut milk!  It's good in soups too...
My husband's allergic to milk, so I use it to make my soups too!  My tomato-basil (and coconut, I guess) soup is pretty good :)
I have a pumpkin curry soup recipe that I use coconut milk in instead of evaporated milk... mmm makes it so much yummier. =)

wow, those resources are um, impressive - a bit overwhelming - but Thanks!
I was going to ask about coconut milk...Man I bet that would be good...Ima try it..:)
How about plain fruit and juice?  I like a frozen smoothie made with a frozen banana and frozen strawberries or peaches, and orange juice.  Another good one is mango & blueberries.  You can always add protein powder.
that's cool claire - that's what I was wondering if anyone actually makes them this way.

seems like almost all the recipes have either milk or soy milk or yogurt or frozen yogurt...

if you like it with just frozen fruit and juice, that's good enough for me!

I am gonna try one with coconut milk tho...

thanks! =)
The possibilities are endless!  In the summer, peaches and strawberries, in the winter bananas and oranges.  I even made a frozen watermelon smoothie with frozen melon balls.
Those sound good claire...

I think I'll make a list of some good stand-bys.  Because my brain is fuzzy first thing in the morning..  :)

But just wanted to say that I made a smoothie this morning with what I had on hand.... frozen cherries, half a banana, half an apple, the lite coconut milk, vanilla whey protein powder and a bit of water and OMG was it ever delicious!!

Thanks so much for suggesting coconut milk!  I love it in a smoothie!
Coconut milk is really fatty.  Try almond milk (slightly less bad and good on the protein) or rice milk (really low fat).  Or you can make fruit smoothies using OJ as your base.
The solution to high fat coconut milk - get the fat free kind, or - pour it into a bowl, refrigerate overnight, and in the morning lift off the hardened fat.  You get the flavor but not the fat.
Seriously, try rice milk.  I forgot to tell you also that the chocolate kind tastes like Yoohoo.  I just think that's fabulous. :)

You can also get it fortified with B vitamins and calcium and all that schtuff.
rice milk and almond milk -- both great ideas!

don't know why I didn't think of them - I actually have almond milk in my fridge right now.

I swear - I think I have early onset alzheimers sometimes...

i used the light coconut milk and it was super yummy  but I will try the others too.

thanks!  =)
Here's a nice smoothie recipe for you,

Chocolate almond milk, chocolate protein powder (opt), frozen watermelon chunks, frozen mixed berries, little bit of oatmeal (med) in size. Blend the heck out of it and your good to go. I partially freeze them in a water bottle and take them to work for that always necessary 3 p.m. snack.
You don't have to use milk at all I use apple juice, banana, frozen berries, honeydew, and peaches.  I put mine in a magic bullet I love those things :) they work very well for smoothies and blending fruits and are really quick and easy.  If you like something tangier rather than sweet you can use orange juice instead of apple that's yummy too.
1 cup chocolate almond/rice milk, 1 frozen banana, & 1 tbsp peanut butter. It is delicious. Only 310 calories too.
Ilisa!  That sounds like dessert to me!  Heavenly!
