Loose people, please LOSE the "O" :)

Quote  |  Reply

I'm a teacher, and I give my students little tricks to help them with words many of them often misspell. One of these may help some of you here: you "lose the 'o' when you spell 'lose.' " If it helps a few of you, then I'll be glad I posted. Am I'm not trying to be bosy or anything, but I know it is irritating to others when people routinely misspell words and I'm seeing this one a lot on this site!

hear hear!

...and "bosy" is spelled with a double "s"--bossy ;p

That's a neat trick for people who have trouble spelling. Unfortunately since "loose" is a word people won't pick it up on spell check.

It doesn't irritate me, but it does at the same time. I always feel guilty that it irritates me though. haha

Then there are people like me who can't spell to save their sorry little lives. :( I swear its genetic. I don't think I've made that mistake though! :D

However if you do see me spelling stuff horribly wrong please feel free to correct me, as spelling is not a gift I posess.

For a teacher to write "bosy" instead of "bossy"(particularly in the midst of correcting others' spellings) is, you must admit, slightly disheartening.

It was supposed to be a joke, but I guess no one got it!

Hehe and it's possess :)

I think the point here is that there are people who consistently spell things wrong, versus people who make a small error, or a typo.  I pointed out the bossy thing as a joke, not as a critism.  :)

...or criticism

Awwww, look.  I know this one is supposed to be light hearted and I took it as such.  I thought the post was funny.

However, being dyslexic I spell words wrong ALL the time.  As an adult I have even tried to re-teach myself..but I still manage to switch letters and numbers and often the rules to spelling make no sense ( I after E except after C ....WHAT?!?! ) That just can not apply to me.

I use spell check and still there are words that because I do not see them correctly I have to guess which of the words spell check is offering me is right.

I realize that spelling is a pet peeve for so many, but for many of us mi-spellers it is something we hold no pride over nor do we do it to annoy anyone.  Also, Americans spell things different as well ie. Realize vs. realise...colours vs. colors.. while vs. whilst..

When life can be so hard, I just can not be bothered with other people's spelling even though I am always trying to work on my own.

To the OP, yes!   That set of words Lose, Loose, and loss have been difficult for me and YES I do think you're little trick will help out a whole lot.  Thank you !

Sorry to jump on the misspelling and grammar train here, but it's I BEFORE E (except after C)...

And I totally agree with the OP, even though people don't do it on purpose it's still really irritating.  Just like you can't help misspelling words, we can't help but notice it and cringe a little inside.  It's like nails on a chalkboard.

Bah, and here I even checked that word through google! D: I've been deceived! Oh wait, no.. I just forgot to go back and correct it. XP

Ironically I get irritated if I see people blatently spelling words wrong, despite my obvious handicap.

@ Seren - And don't forget the difference between desert and dessert! The Tasty one asks for seconds on the 's'. Or it goes something like that...

See?!?! I told you it does not apply to me ! Hehe.

This bit isn't to Tennis, so tennis don't take this personally, please.

Of course I know people notice mistakes.  Even I notice mistakes sometimes, I however just can not be bothered to tell someone about it.

If this were face to face, it would be found rude to correct someone with whom you are talking to.  And really, at the end of your day does it really matter if I someone you haven't met personally made spelling or grammar mistakes..I hope not.

There are lots of travesties made against humanity, I don't  think  a misspelled word really counts as one.

The use of LOL truly annoys me.  Americans use it differently than a lot of the rest of the world in gaming terms.  If I'm playing War-hammer on-line and an American LOL's it means  ( for the most part ) they find something funny, if someone maybe Aussie or Scottish  LOL's it's meant they think you're a bit of a wanker and it's used as sarcasm.

Example :  Someone says " Whoah ! I didn't see that big ass ogre over there and I targeted him and brought him and all his big assed ogre friends down on us and they wiped our whole party out..woopsie, LOL !"

Now, the LOL's  responses come...maybe one LOL is meant as they really find that funny as they re-spawn, however you also get LOL's that mean " You wanker, now I have re-spawn sickness and I have to PAY the healer then run ALL the way back 'cause you were scratching your arse and not watching what you were doing, you twelve year old boy playing  a female elf"

People LOL around me ALL The time..there is nothing I can do about it, and I am not going to call the person on it and ask them, do they mean it or are they being a wanker.

There are lottsa things on-line that can be annoying, I do find it rude to call people out on these things.

I wonder where grace went?   At a tea party, one would never ever think to call out another lady for the improper use of a word.  Why? Because you are face to face with that person and mentioning it would be tactless and considered rude. Exception to this may if you are very good friends and you did it teasingly...even then questionable.

I don't always secede, but I do try to interact with people on-line like I would face to face.

i see that particular one on other sites too.

eh, im frequently in a rush on here (like i should be getting ready for work now) so my grammar & spelling is a bit off some times. i put a disclaimer in my profile tho. and then i make matters worse when i go back to try to clarify my sentences, they some times come out more jumbled then when i first typed them. i noticed on one of my posts that i wrote antagonist when i meant agnostic and no one caught me on it. i felt a little relieved no one called me on it but then also a little embarrassed cuz im sure someone noticed but didnt bother to say anything.

but i do think there is a difference from the way certain cultures spell & use words  than just plain spelling mistakes & using the incorrect word. im an american expat in ireland & depending on whom i am writing, i often have to go back & forth with different spellings.

"if someone maybe Aussie or Scottish  LOL's it's meant they think you're a bit of a wanker and it's used as sarcasm. "

As a Scot I have to disagree I'm afraid, as a keen online gamer who plays with a Scots Gaming Clan.  LOL is just that Laugh Out Loud.  The joy of the Scots is...if we think you are a w*nker...you'll get told you are a w*nker.  I'm sorry this is the view you have of our sarcasm, you must have been playing with the few numpties that give the majority of us a bad attitude reputation.

i think sereniticat was actually saying that she is a scot. but they use 'lol' as 'laugh out loud' over here in ireland too.

Yes, Ravennight ! I have been playing with some real tools !   Not in this game but another one.  I do know that this isn't sarcasm for all Scots or Aussies or non Americans... just some of the folks I've played on-line with.  So, like I was saying I never really know if LOL is LOL to that person or not.

I know an Aussie who thinks the use of full stops is rude whilst roll playing on-line..you just never know what on-line is going to upset some people...was my point.  hehe, I married that Aussie !
