Ok, I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks. Great forums, great tool, great people so far. I've managed to lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks using the site and have recommended it to all of my health concious friends.
That being said I'm amazed at the number of people who don't know the difference between the words loose and lose. I've seen this over and over on these forums and it just a little annoying. I don't mean to be a grammar nazi because lord knows I can't spell for crap but this is such a simple one to get right.
Loose is an adjective, the opposite of tight or contained.
My shoes are loose
I have a loose tooth
There's a dog running loose in the street
Lose is a verb that means to suffer the loss of, to miss.
I win! You lose!
Don't lose your keys
I never lose bets
THANK YOU! HAHA--I've been thinking this the ENTIRE time I've been on here! Sometimes I wonder if it's just younger CCers and in that case they shouldn't even be on here really...but usually it's adults! C'mon guys, let's get that right. Thanks for giving a perfect example of proper uses. ;)
yeah i totally agree, I fight the urge to correct them constantly. ; )
tagged it!
thank you jewels :)
How about your and you're?! I see an example of one or the other misused on a daily basis- not just here but everywhere.
You're is you+are - so when in doubt, change the sentence in your mind to "you are" and you'll know if YOU'RE using it correctly:
You're going to the prom with him?!
YOUR implies ownership or relationship to something / someone else - your car, your mom, your diet, etc.
Your prom dress is ugly.
HA- just saw the other post and I see this has already been covered! ![]()
There can never be enough threads on this. The day we can post in a forum without "HELP guys I'm not loosing weight" is the day we can retire this thread SO THERE.
your write, thats' alot of in fomasion four sum two grassp. I to, notiz thees ms. spelled words. sum times its hard too except when wear corected be cause it can bee embarasing...
sum people dont chek they're spelling (even IF they no how two spell, accept when they really need too, or its nessesery.
;)
enjoy #10 as I am officially making it my redundant reply post ;)
Today I was bothered by potatoe, potatos and tomatoe. Grrrr! And combinations of accept/except never fail to do my nut in!
I'm not terribly bothered by the misspelled words, especially when the writer is clearly still pretty young. My biggest pet peeve is when people don't use question marks at the ends of their questions and/or don't really punctuate at all. Stuff like this:
i dont think it has a lot of calories but i dont know yesterday i think i ate too much do you think this is bad.
Everyone on here should be old enough to have learnt to spell.
Pretty much everyone should have been in school for at least 7 years (assuming everyone's 12+). It's the adults who can't spell that make me sad though, but perhaps this really is lack of education hence sad not cross.
Yes, seriously. Sorry, I thought learnt and learned were both correct, they are according to dictionary.com anyway. Like burnt and burned? Or are they for completely different uses?
Learnt....is right....English Dictionary learn, learning learnt or learned. So you are quite right ducklinger and burn, burning, burnt or burned same use....so right again.
Cool, thanks, I thought so. I pronounce it learnt with an 'urnt' rather than 'urned' so I prefer to use learnt.
Yeah me to...urned sounds awkward.
What type of food should not be eaten?
Calorie Count does not prescribe a particular diet or tell people to avoid particular foods. We only ask that you eat a balanced diet... Read more
