How to lose bulkiness in thighs?! HELP!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey all! I'm currently trying to lose ten pounds and I've noticed that my upper body is starting to tone up more than my lower even though I do running and biking (bizarre?!). Anyways I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make your thighs leaner (exercises or stretches etc.). I had a pear/hourglass shape but I'm aiming to lose a few inches in my hips which currently measure in a just under 39inches. My biggest area i need to fix is my inner thigh. My legs are pretty muscular though from my years of playing soccer. Sorry for rambling on here haha. So yeah if you have any exercise that will help shead some inches on my thighs & hips it would be much appreciated! THANKS! Embarassed

Tracey Anderson (trainer to the stars) has some leg workouts available as podcasts on iTunes, and on the goop.com site that are awesome! They really work on tightening and toning the legs and butt, and they don't require any equipment or large space. They are basically an assortment of leg lift repetitions.

About Tracey Anderson, and considering what happened to her.... I dunno.

Unfortunately, if you want to actually lose muscle, disuse is the fastest way to do it, but that's assuming muscle is really the problem (scroll about halfway down for the pictures).

If it's fat, there isn't a way to spot burn fat - it leaves when it wants to, through keeping a calorie deficit - that's diet and exercise.

Any exercise you do will help you lose inches (assuming you maintain a calorie deficit), but no exercise will cause any lose in size in any specific area of the body.

Tracey Anderson is about as knowledgeable about training as my dog is about brain surgery.

Thank you for the article sumptuous.com I loved reading it! very insightful ;)

Thanks for the comment! I don't actually want to lose muslce I just want to make it a little less bulky and leaner? I guess my thighs are bit thunger thigh-ish but not to much. I eat roughly 1500 calories per day and workout 40-50 minutes on my stationary bike and I'm going for a run 2-3 times a week (around 2 miles) and I go for 30 brisk walks as well.

Agree with floggingsully that spot training does not work. You just have to lose weight all over.

i don't think it is possible to lose weight specifically in 1 place...but you can definitely change the shape of your body - example low intensity leg weights i think would help....or sprinting....

what type of running do you do? have you tried doing hitt workouts with weights??

it seems counterintuitive that doing leg weights would slim you down but it will definitely give them nice shape...i used to have bulkier legs (compared to the rest of my body) then i started incorporating squats lunges etc with 20 pound weights

What does this mean? Muscles can get bigger or smaller or stay the same size.  All muscle is just as lean as all other muscle.  How 'bulky' they are is a funciton of how big they are, if you want your muscles to be 'less bulky' they have to get smaller.

Essentially, since you don't want to lose muscle, and as sully said, you can't purposefully just change the shape of the muscle, you'll have to work on reducing fat - so as said above, keeping a deficit will eventually lead to your thighs slimming somewhat, but how much is more determined by genetics (some of us were just born to store more weight in certain places).
