Weight Loss

Sorry if this offends anyone, but people use the word "loose" incorrectly on the CC forum all the time. Here is the correct usage:

"I want to LOSE weight."

"I have LOOSE skin after losing all that weight."

Here is a more authoritative example if you are still skeptical.

Hopefully at least one person learns from this. It would make my day.

And it's hunger pangs, not hunger pains.

I've been seeing "hunger pains" on here so much that now "hunger pangs" almost looks weird to me.

Actually, hunger 'pain' is also correct.  It's one of those interchangeable expressions.  I agree, however, that 'pang' is probably more accurate.

hunger pain n.

Pain or discomfort in the epigastrium associated with hunger.

One of my pet peeves is the lack of knowledge between a podium and a lectern.

A podium is a platform that you stand on (think Olympics medal ceremony).  A lectern is the thing you stand behind which can serve to hold your speech or a book.

Podium is one of those words that has been so overused for so many years, it's now interchangeable with lectern.  I believe that Webster's recently adopted the new definition.  A permutation perhaps?

And then there's the whole issue with the word troop! I always thought it referred to a group of soldiers or other individuals.  Now when you hear on the news that they "sent 10,000 troops overseas" they mean 10,000 people.  Since when did 'troop' come to mean one person?  (Here's a Web source to back me up on this one: http://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2006/08/on- troop-and-troops.html)

Oh my gosh (or god) i.e. OMG!!!!  I'm on a major rant now!  Help me!!!!!

I feel so sorry for anyone who has to learn english as a second lanuage!!!!

Am I misusing or abusing exclamation points here?

Oh!  Don't forget 'hear' vs. 'here,' or has that been discussed?

HELP ME!!!!!!  Make me stop!!!!

Can you say ANAL!!!!

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

That was a gramatically correct sentence.  Did you know that?  :O

I hate that too, about the podium/ lectern business. I'm in debate and I've heard people misuse the words. Another one, you ask? Definitely, not definately. http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/.

P.S. AMAZING transformation! :).

This is great!

  Don't forget, it's...

Should HAVE, not should of...

and someone, please tell me, what DOES

ALL IN ALL mean??

I used to be an English teacher, so I admit cringing when I see "loose," "definately," "hunger pains," etc.

My DH has an odd habit of using the past tense when he should use the past participle: "I should've ate," "I could've went," and the like that makes my ears bleed. Cry

You just reminded me...all the incorrect ways "bring" and "take" are used, even in published books.

At least he doesn't say ''I should of ate'' or '' I could of went''

I too am a fully paid up member of the grammar and punctuation police. I chat a lot on a cooking forum and you would not believe how many ways people spell 'recipe'.

'Taken for granite' is a completely new one on me though!

I promise I'm not picking on a type of question, because we all need help and support with weight loss. I just made up a few sentences that use the words discussed in this thread so far. I'm also well aware that I am far from a flawless user of grammar. That's my disclaimer.

Now, how many errors can you find in the following group of sentences?

I use too weight alot less then I do now but me and Bob don't walk anymore now. Too be pacific, I want to loose fat. Anyways, what should I of ate to stop gaining? I am self conscience and think that people who are thin feel better about themself. There more confident and comfortable in they're skin. When your thin you can wear clothes that don't have to hide my thighs. There also able to buy they're clothes in regular stores to. I would like to loose the weight than where my skinny pants again.

Do people really say pacific while meaning to say specific?... Can't imagine how people can confuse those two words...Could be because I'm deaf- I don't depend on how the word sounds to spell it out, though it sucks sometimes (being deaf, that is.) Smile

Oh, this is FUNNY. I forgot about the "your" for "you're" and "they're" for "their" mistakes...

OMG, you're KILLING me!! Laughing  I couldn't read through that without wanting to tear my skin off! Yell

Skookum, the people here at work must think I am crazy!  I just laughed out loud (lol) for the first time while reading something on here! That paragraph was GREAT!

Just once, I would love to smack the idiot who says "pacific" instead of "specific".

Or "for all intensive purposes"

OMG!  That is absolutely hilarious!!!!  I can't believe someone would actually spell it that way!!!!

All of the sudden!

Patients/patience!

a whole nother! (although I do say this lol I kick myself)

It is a good thing you ladies don't live in the south....

Wat choo doin? (What are you doing?)

Done n et. ( I have eaten.)

Yawntoo? (Do you want to...?)

How can you expect anyone who talks like this to know the difference in "lose" and "loose"?

I interviewed a very highly educated (on paper) lady for a job and she consistently used the wrong words and insisted that she had gradgeee-aided at the top of her class! Reeeeealy?

I am not a great speller and my grammaris pretty awful, too (I just noticed spell check btw), HOWEVER, I can not stand it when people type out words in slang format: doin', ain't, wat...

Basically what kmejia is writing about. Oh that's annoying! LOL. 1 person specifically comes to mind on this site and I can't even read her posts or feel any pity for her bc her words are not real! lol

Another grammatical nightmare common to CC is using the term "curve your appetite" vs. the correct "curb your appetite".

I think the issue is not the spelling errors so much as the fact that many people believe that they are using the words correctly.

taken for granite

Now, there, don't you know how you're supposed to respond to this one? The next time someone informs you they don't want to be 'taken for granite', you just tell them, "Honey, I don't think anyone will mistake you for a rock formation." Laughing

Let's add 'axe' for 'ask' to the list, shall we?

Irregardless is one of those that makes my ears bleed too. There are a lot that I can ignore, but that one makes me cringe when I hear it.
