How many pounds did you lose before people noticed?

Quote  |  Reply

So..I've lost 14 pounds so far and the only person that has noticed so far is my mom, who said she can see it in my face. My husband hasn't said anything but he's been extra touchy feely...which makes me think he's still/more happy with the way I look.

I've noticed my pants and shirts fit and feel better, and my back doesn't hurt anymore. But besides that - NOBODY has said anything to me!

How many pounds did it take you before people took notice.

BTW - this is not something I've publicized. My mom didn't even know I was dieting when she told me that. So, nobody knows (besides the hubby). I am getting to the point where I need to hear something like, "you look good!" or "it looks like you lost weight"...am I being silly?

I think it was about 20-25 pounds before anyone noticed on me.  I was pretty big though at 225 so by the time I hit 200 people started to notice.

I agree that its nice to hear people telling you your looking good or slim or smaller.  It helps to keep you motivated.

Good luck with your weight loss!

I was also around the -20 pounds mark when people really started to notice, and was 200+. People who knew I was exercising and starting to live healthier noticed around 10 though. I agree that the compliments are extremely motivating!

G'Luck! Pretty soon those compliments will be pouring in eeeendlessly:)

You guys are amazing. Really great inspiration for me to lose weight.

I know how you feel Ceils. I'm always being told by my soon to be mother in law how I can eat less and walk more, but once I lost 20 pounds she hasn't noticed. It's nice for people to recognize our achievements, it's positive reinforcement. Until they start using their brains and pointing out how great you look you can always remind yourself by trying on your old "fat" clothes. Cool

It always makes me realize how far I've come, and I try on the pair that don't fit me yet and see how close I am getting.

Ive lost 20lbs so far, and noone has even noticed yet :/.

Yes Ceils you are being silly...lol.  14 pounds isn't much to notice, especially if you aren't in the habit of wearing skin tight clothes and who is at this time of year?   People first noticed in me when I went from 240-220.  At the time I was working out of town for about 7 weeks and when I got back, people definitely noticed.   After that I lost 10-15 lbs a couple of times and I can't remember anyone noticing.

Don't sweat it.  Do it for yourself, and if anyone notices, just consider it the icing on the cake!!

I think it was 25 pounds for me.

it took me 30lbs and new clothes (better fitting) before people noticed.

One person noticed after 10, a few noticed at 20 and lots noticed at 30. That's when I had to start buying lots of new clothes. I've had to spend some money, but now that I'm beginning to be able to shop in regular store I don't mind so much. I've noticed regular size clothing is cheaper.

it took me like 20 pounds before i started getting peoples attention about it.

but one thing i noticed is even some of my best friends who i see everyday still haven't said anything, but people i don't see everyday and only see on occasion have noticed alot more.

Well, it's a lot harder for someone who sees you everyday to notice a difference, just because it's such a gradual change.

People who see you everyday aren't going to notice until you've probably lost 20 pounds or so.  That's usually about 2 sizes.  People who you don't see very often will notice after you've lost about 10 pounds or 1 size.

to be honest, most of my friends wouldn't say anything for fear it would imply they thought i was fat before, which none of them do btw.

however, ive only lost five pounds and my uncle noticed on friday. he said "god you look so thin"

highlight of my week :)

for me, it takes like 15-20 pounds until someone notices, but usually people who haven't seen me in a while. if someone sees me everyday, the gradual change isn't evident until they see a picture or until they just ... notice it. plus some people might not be as vocal about it?

the good news with this is that, when i gained my weight, no one noticed but me :-p haha. that's the silver lining in my 15 pound gain from last semester.

good luck!

It also depends how much you weighed before, and how tall you are.  A couple people started noticing after I'd lost my first 10 pounds or so, but I'm under 5 feet tall and I was going from 165 to 155 - so proportionally, it was a *big* difference!
I peeked at some of your other posts, and it looks like you're in a similar boat height-wise, and approaching a similar weight, so I'm not surprised the folks closest to you have started noticing.

I'm sure the more you lose, the more they'll get over the "we see her every day" effect that nosillassim mentioned - and I bet casual acquaintances are already starting to notice that something is up, they just can't put their finger on it.  Be prepared for people to feel awkward complimenting you, though... there's just no socially-good way to do it.  ;c)

Thank you everyone for all your posts!!

Funny enough - today I got a couple compliments (all from women) that they loved my sweater! I thought that was strange because I've worn this sweater before and nobody ever said they liked it all the times I wore it in the past!

Before I started dieting, nobody had complimented me on my clothes, shoes, looks, anything for about 2 years (except a few jewlery compliments, but that doesn't count) - the heaviest two years of my life...

I think they liked my sweater today because I fit into it better and I'm not slouching trying to hide my chest and stomach because of insecurities?

Aha!  I was wrong - there is a socially good way to compliment you on your weight loss!  You're right; when your clothes fit you better and you carry yourself better in them, sometimes people will compliment the clothes rather than your body.  Much safer territory, and it has the virtue of being true: a sweater that fits you *is* a pretty sweater.

So well done, ceils!  Looks like people are noticing after all!  ;c)

I lost about 13lbs before anyone began to notice.

Dang this is all rather depressiong, I lost 6 measley pounds, and I would really love if it was more noticeable... I guess that's just vanity but still, it would be highly motivated to see that the changes and the work that I am doing is starting to show...

I'm 4'11" so at 12 lbs my sisters told me & a couple people I told were like "Ya I noticed in church last Sunday you were losing weight but didn't want to say anything"

I get real exited so when I see a diff I usually talk about it:) Big gratz on the sweater compliment.  people will not be able to help but comment after about 25 lbs.  so Good luck.

The last time I lost a bunch of weight I didn't really get noticed 'till I dropped about 25-30 lbs. Then it sort of happened all at once. I am a pretty extroverted type, chatty, too, and everyone knew I was trying to lose. I'm a minister in a church, so people tend to see a lot of me. Actually, at one point, some of the more grandmotherly types were worried about me 'cause they thought I was losing too fast. I have to admit that felt pretty good. Except they were right because I wasn't eating enough and started to feel shaky and light-headed from time to time. I am being more smart about it this time.

Bottom line...do you notice? What do you notice? Is it your clothes? Do you have a "lightness of being" that you didn't have a few weeks ago? These are my prime motivators...when I can start loving myself again, I care less and less what others think.

Cheers!

Mike

Just had a co-worker comment on the new bod :-) a few mins after this post.
