Why did I lose my period?
Asked by freepeacelove on Sep 16, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I'm 15 years old, 5'7" and weigh 115 pounds. I  lost about 14 pounds over 4 months and haven't had my period since.  I eat very healthy, like for example non fat yogurt with fruit and whole grain cereal and soy milk, spinach salad with vegetables, lean fish and vegetables, diet soda. I'm worried.  I'm trying to be thin and healthy at the same time. I don't usually eat more than 1,100 calories in a day, unless it is a special occasion.

Answer

Under-eating, rapid weight loss, excessive thinness, and low body fat can disrupt your hormones to make ovulation and your periods stop. The condition is called amenorrheaamenorrhea (a’.men.or.rhe.a), the absence of menstrual periods. amenorrheaamenorrhea can lead to infertility and other medical problems ,such as thinning of the bones. Visit your doctor for a complete assessment.

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) of 18 places you in the underweight range. You need to regain to a healthy weight of 127 to 134 lbs. The food you choose to eat is wholesome, but you need to eat more of it. Increase your calorie intake to 2000 a day.
