How did I lose weight after binging??

Quote  |  Reply

So I binged yesterday... my total caloric intake for the day ended up being 3,500 cals!!! Frown And I'm back to healthy eating and exercise today, but when I woke up this morning, I actually LOST some weight. Now how in the world is that possible?!! =//  I don't think I will ever understand how this whole caloric intake/output exercise thing works.

I mean, I understand how sometimes one can jump start one's metabolism by eating a few hundred more calories, but I mean, come on, yesterday I went like 2,000 ABOVE my normal intake!!! Surprised

What you eat Day 1 does not necessarily affect what you weigh Day 2.   Your weight can go up or down on any given day, regardless of what you ate the day before.   It's the long-term trend that's most important, therefore, not the daily ups and downs.

You've gotten a second chance!  Our bodies have a mind of their own sometimes and so you can't always predict what will happen.  Just learn from yesterday and keep moving forward!

Actually, a one day refeed is pretty good at re-setting leptin levels and releasing a lot of held water weight.

It isn't uncommon, especially if your intake was higher carb/lower fat.

Well it's been my (limited) experience so far that if I have a really bad day, it can hit me up to 2 days later on the scale. A couple of weeks ago, I was doing really well (up until the weekend) and was very happy to see the scale drop on a Sunday even after I had a bad Friday night. Monday however, the scale hit me with a vengeance dialing up 3 pounds.

As has been said it's really not worth weighing from day to day. You should look at a trend and not daily fluctuations as the latter are very inaccurate readings of what your weight is really doing.

I'm the same as javagen.  I usually don't see the effects of a poor diet choice (more likely a string of poor diet choices, like the week in which I ate some kind of sugary snack every day) on my weight until a few days later. . . which makes sense, as it usually takes at least 24 hours for the nutrients, along with all the not-so-good stuff, to be absorbed into our bodies, let alone for the rest pass entirely through the system.

That being said, going 1,500 over your norm for one day isn't by any means the end of the world.  Remember, you have to consume 3,500 above your norm just to gain one pound of fat, so you've not even done enough to gain a half a pound of real weight.  Just remember that we all have days like that where we fall off the horse every now and again, and all you have to do is get back on it again the next day and pretend it never happened.  I know it's tough, but try not to beat yourself up over it.

I did that last weekend, two bad days in a row (cheesecake, frozen yogurt...).  Then monday I lost 3lbs.  I noticed I put on a half a pound a few days later.  I'm with for_zev, it's probably just a loss of water.

I have gone back and worth on the daily weigh in.  Have decided for me it works because if I am up, I tend to work harder on exercise that day.  If I am down I tend to continue on the right path because I am encouraged.  Now what it is that makes me just stop doing either eating right or working hard on exercise is what I would like to know.

I have been at this now for almost six weeks and doing very well, but have to admit I am capable at any moment of tossing the whole concept.  I definitely react to stress and this world is very stressful at the moment.  I am trying to stay connected to my faith which seems to be the only facit of this life in which  I have total control.

God bless you all and please pray for our country at this time of great stress.

Barbara
