Hi, I am new here. I have been trying all year to lose some weight but every time I step on the scale I weight the same thing. I try to be active and eat right and nothing changes! Can I really EVER lose weight??
That pop-hiss noise is the sound of you opening a can of worms :P You can get more advice here than you could ever have conceived existed. A lot of good advice, though, so it's at least a start.
I'm not a handy person, but pegged at the top of the fitness and the food forums are long posted topics on eating right and exercising, which are great places to start. There are a fantastic set of tools just laying around here to help you out.
Of course, tools are only as good as the wielder - so good luck, and wave that weight-loss hammer proudly once you've figured out how to use it :)
This is only my second week on here and I havent gotten on the scale.. i'm too scared to see that I haven't lost any weight! In general, I do FEEL better about myself, but honestly my clothes are fitting about the same it seems.
I'm like you psalm, I've been trying for at least a year with just about everything. I work out at least 4-5 times a week (and have been for a year or more) and i've gained weight. Soooo, a trainer at the gym told me "weight loss is 70% what you eat, only about 30% exercise,"and i've decided that I need to focus on my diet.
I can tell you this tho, since i've started i'm surprised at how quickly calories add up. Apparently I WAS eating a lot more than I thought.... SO, i'm going to stick this and see what happens!
I had the same problem you did. I was eating better but I wasn't dropping the pounds. It turned out I was eating more than I thought and I didn't know it until I kept a log. I suggest you try it for a week. Write everything down that you eat, when you eat it. You may be surpised by what you are actually consuming.
I was suprised over the past few years that as active as I was and how little I ate at times, I could not consistently or permanently lose weight. Then I found this site, learned my mistake, and since correcting it, wow! Yep, it works.
Pretty simple, too. Use the burn tool to figure out an estimate of how many cals you burn on average. I recommend setting your activity level to "sedentary" and logging any significant exercise you do separately. Then subtract 500-700 from that, and you know how many calories to consume. Log what you eat, keep track of the cals, and as long as you have that 500-700 calorie "deficit" (what you burn minus what you eat), you will lose.
Some things to keep in mind: drink water, get enough sleep. Always eat at least 1200 calories and don't let your deficit be more than 1000 (if you have a big exercise day, for example, eat enough to make sure you deficit is not over 1000).
After an initial drop due to water weight changes, you may see no change in the scale for several weeks. Don't panic! You lost water, and then you will slowly replace it and be losing fat at the same time, and the weight doesn't seem to change. This is why measuring yourself or checking the fit of your clothes can be useful, to see progress when the scale isn't moving.
So, jump right in, ask questions, and good luck!!
Alright, I'm trying this thing but, I don't feel like I am doing very well. I almost met my goal for eating but I was bit off on exercise. I just don't know how to fit anymore exercise into my life. I have a treadmill but I can run because I get shin splints and have weak ankles! :(
And how come my calorie goal is set at a certain limit but the eat meter makes me eat more than it? Like it says, 1550 but then I could only reach the line yesterday on my eat meter if I ate 2000 calories.
So confused :(
Being active and eating right is a good way to be healthy but doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight..... Usually, the reason for not losing weight is eating too much compared with the activity you're doing or eating more than you think because you're not accurately keeping tabs.

Two weeks is way too short to expect to see any results, and if you do it's probably water weight you lost. On sensible diet and exercise plan, 1lb a week is more than enough. You can't expect to go down a clothing size right away.
The hardest part for me is that I never see a weight drop. I started working out more and eating a lot better at the beginning of the summer (I wasn't on here yet) and I expected to see results by now but nothing. I weight the same as always! Frustrating!
In order to help you properly, we need your stats. We need to know your age, height, and weight so that we can help you figure out what you need to do to lose weight.
I think this is what everyone finds when they start a food log: We eat a lot more than we think! The other day I took my mother-in-law to breakfast. Before using CC I would have just ordered and eaten whatever was put in front of me. But this time I suggested to my mother-in-law that we split a senior breakfast omelet (I'm 58). We also substituted fruit for the potatos. We each got one pancake with the split. The 1/2 meal was plenty. But when I logged it in it also still had more calories than if I eaten my usual yogurt and fruit at home. I used to eat an entire restaurant portion no problem. Yikes! And in my case, with high cholesterol, it was just lining my arteries with plaque.

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
