Can you lose weight while taking an antidepressant?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I have been taking lexapro for about 4 months. While it has helped me a great deal, I have gained about 15 pounds. I am want to start watching my calories and working out to shed some weight but I don't want it to be in vain. Is it possible to lose while on the lexapro or will I need to go off to see progress?

Answer

Lexapro should not interfere with your efforts to lose weight.  Lexapro (escitalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder.  Research showed that it is not associated with significant weight gain. In studies, after 6-8 months of treatment with escitalopram, weight change averaged only one pound.  Your recent weight gain is probably not related to Lexapro.
