Can I lose weight while trying to get pregnant?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 22, 2008 in Family & Pregnancy

I am trying to get pregnant, but am also trying to lose about 15 pounds.  Is there a safe way that I can do both?

Answer

A healthy, moderate weight loss diet will not harm to your fertility.  Aim for the number of calories it takes to maintain your ideal weight – for you, that is 1800 calories a day.  Your preconception diet should be full of essential vitamins and nutrients, especially folic acid, which is necessary for embryonic cell development in the first trimester. Folic acid is found in leafy green vegetables, avocados, peanuts, fortified cereals, breads, and orange juice.  The March of Dimes recommends taking a multivitamin supplement containing 400 micrograms of folic acid every day when you are trying to conceive.  Read more about preconceptional planning at About.com.
