Losing Weight

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 16 years old, 5'10" and roughly 192lbs,

I want to lose weight by the 25th June, i go to the gym nearlly every day, do about 30 mins of cardio (all added together) and about 15 mins of weights (all added together)

I've been trying this for almost 2 months, but i've seen NO difference, and neither has anyone else, i think it's because of what i eat, but thats the thing, i don't know what i should be eating, people saying 'eating your veg' isn't very helpful.

My Mum isn't that helpful either, she just keeps giving me crap to eat (sorry for my language) and she just says that it's healthy, and i'm stupid enough to trust her, shes overweight aswell, and has tried to lose weight, but failed, and i think she thinks i'm going to do the same, fail.

i have tried counting my calories, but it gets a bit confusing, do i burn more than i take in?

I have been bullied most of my life for being overweight, and now, i want to do something about it. if i eat right, and exercise properly, when is the earliest i could be slim?

If anyone has any other tips on what to do to speed the process up (healthely) then please, don't hesitate to reply :)

I think it would be wonderful for you and your Mum to work together to get healthier!  I would love my mother (whole family, actually) to join me.

Ask your Mum if you can buy a food scale (we have them here for under $15 at Walmart).  They are not expensive, but they are very helpful.  Weigh your food in grams then enter them on this site.  I think a good tape measure is also very helpful.  If you notice that you are not losing despite working out and eating healthy, you may see the difference in your body size instead of your weight.

Choose foods that are healthy, like fresh fruits and vegetables.  Eat low fat protein (like shrimp, fish, chicken breast, egg whites, etc.) and whole grains.  Toss out the white bread and rice!  Brown is better :) if it's whole grain!  Nuts are a great snack in moderation (I eat them every day).

Trade solid fats like butter for a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil...very tasty and a healthy fat.

Don't forget to make an offer to your Mum...invite her to walk or workout with you everyday.  You can even offer a challenge--like if you both stick to your new healthy eating plan AND walk (or exercise) for 30 minutes everyday for say, 2 weeks, then you can reward yourselves with something enjoyable...like a manicure, pedicure, new shoes....

Enjoy and remember that the journey of developing healthy habits can be fun!

:)

I have attually noticed my body size decrease, as in around my waist, because before i ended school, my school trousers were a good 42"? or maybe a 40", and the jeans i wear on a daily basis, are all different sizes, one is a 40", there pretty baggy, anothers 38 or 36", and they did fit perfect when i bought them, (few months ago), and i have a pair that my brother gave me for some random reason, and there 34", and the other day, i thought, what the heck, might as well try them on, and i could do the button up!!! i was really shocked, because before when i tried them on, i could hardly get them above my thighs, but the thing about the 34" jeans, is there a bit tight around the thighs, so hopefully a few or many more workouts will fix that.

But the ONE main place i want to work on are my 'man-boobs' , and i already know you can't target one place at a time, but when i firsst started working out, i measured them, from the bit below, all around to the nipple, and they were 7cm, at least, and i measured them this morning (curiosity) and they were 6cm, and i've just been doing bench-presses in my room on a night before i go to bed.

I've been thinking about doing that, rewarding myself, i'm going to talk to my Mum tomorrow, and see, if like every 5lbs i drop, i get like £5 or something like that, or even perhaps, £1 a lb, so therefore, if i lose weight, she gives me money, BUT if i put the weight back on, i have to pay her. So it could go either way :)

Please don't equate weight loss with monetary rewards, especially if it's coming from Mum.  That is the wrong sort of motivation, friend.  You need to make changes in your attitude; seems like you have already in your nutritional eating!  Don't "bargain" a reward from Mum. You can do this on your own!  Don't mean to sound brutal, but I think that you are really looking at weight loss as a "reward" for healthy eating.  Your first idea of rewarding yourself is the best one.  Who else are you going to be accountable to for the rest of your life but you. Wink

I agree that I would encourage your mom to get in on this.  Don't call her fat/overweight/anything on that level.  Just tell her that you feel that it's time to learn to eat healthier, and you can't do it without her, because she's such a large part of your life.  Tell her that you think that it would be great if she did it with you because you don't want to do it alone, and that maybe both of you can work on one thing a week.  That way you each have someone to be accountable to, and be encouraged by.

If your mom has weight issues of her own, it's probably best to remember that this is a sensitive subject for her and to proceed with caution.  However, the likelihood is that she will be flattered that you thought of her as your support.  It's at least worth a try.

If that doesn't work, volunteer to make dinner yourself 3/7 days a week to give Mum a break and help you work on your own habits.  Good luck!

If you're concerned with your gynecomastia (man boobs) you should work on muscles in your upper chest to help shape it. It will make them less poofy. Incline bench and shoulder/military presses will strengthen your upper chest area and lift it not making it so bad. Over time you should see they stick out less. If you really do have gynecomastia though and it's not just from fat (I remember seeing a statistic showing that almost 40% of all men have it at some point, usually during puberty, usually they go away with weight loss or just going through puberty) the only way to truly get rid of it, if you've already finished puberty and your weight loss didin't fix them is to have them removed via plastic surgery.

I have been simply watching my calories and making sure I dont go over the reccommended amount each day.  I do little exercise each day, simply watch what I eat and how much I eat.  I have lost about 30 pounds in three months.  I am sure you can do it to, watch the calories, and don't worry much about the burn meter, it can be confusing.  Good luck!
