Losing weight before getting pregnant

Quote  |  Reply

I wanted to start a forum for women who are planning on getting pregnant but who want to lose weight and become healthier before conceiving.

I am 26, 5'6" and currently 262 lbs and recently diagnosed with hypothryroidism. My husband and I are planning on trying to get pregnant at the end of this year (in 11 months!). I have been a member of calorie count for quite a while now and have been incorporating exercise into my daily routine and trying to eat all the right things but have found myself not losing as much weight as I would like.

So, if there's anyone else out there like me with a goal to become healthy and lose weight before getting pregnant, hopefully we can motivate eachother towards this goal!

how's everyone else doing?

That sucks!  Sorry for your low blow.  You can fight that fight too, good luck!

thanks luvmybear!  i know it will all be ok if i just do what i need to do.  how are you doing with your weight loss?

hi all!!! i am beng... been married for 1 yr & 3months... we want to have a baby.. hope to be pregnant soon... but i need and i want to lose weight first for health reasons for myself and for the baby... i started 185 lbs and for 10 days of exercising.. now my weight is 178 lbs... i still want to lose more.. around 50+ lbs more... and i was diagnosed last 2001 for cushing's syndrome... but everything is alright now even my fertility hormones...

anyone has tips how to lose weight fast???

LET'S MOTIVATE EACH OTHER!!!!!

Hi ladies!

I do want to encourage some of you.  I was diagnosed with PCOS a year ago.  The doctor told me that if I got my weight to a healthy range, I would have much better chances of conceiving.  I march of 08 I weighed 170 and got down to 135 in October (i'm 5'2).  I got pregnant naturally, without even counting days, etc.  However, I did miscarry, and I gained weight during the time I was pregnant (and the comfort food that followed).

But, I am here to say that losing weight will help us conceive and have healthier pregnancies.  After the miscarriage I am finally ready to finish my weight loss goals before we try having a baby again.

My current weight is 151 and My goal is 120 (I30 pound loss) and I would like to weigh in every Saturday.  What's good for you girls?

hi amber - saturday is great for me. i would love to weigh in weekly.  i think it would definitely help!!!  and thanks for your encouraging words.  i know it will be ok if i can just get my weight off.  i really think that's the hardest part.  and i'm sure once you are where you want to be, you will have no problems having a baby!

I'm in too!

What is every ones weight loss plan?

I am following a nutrition plan that my doctor gave me.  She has me eating low calories and a high ratio of protein.  I shoot for about 1200 calories a day and try to have protein make up about 70-80 grams of my diet.  So, I eat alot of beans, tofu, eggs, chicken, tuna, and cottage cheese.  I also eat edename and peas and of course fit in veggies and some fruit.  I pretty much limit my bread to very whole grain bread and oats.

I'm trying to excersize more, and that is much more of a challenge for me than the eating part.

What are you all doing?

i'm just counting calories and trying to exercise.  i am not a big fan of exercise.  going to the gym mainly.  eating about 1400 calories a day and supposed to go to the gym for at least 30 minutes 6 days a week.  i still have a day here and there that i have a glass of wine or something else that i really shouldn't have.  i did really well starting last july, i've lost about 28 pounds total so far.  i would really like to lose another 20 pounds before june.  i don't know if i will be able to do it, but i will try!!!!  hopefully going to "start" my new routine tomorrow... going to the gym like i should.

and i agree with you amber, the exercise is so much more of a struggle than eating healthy!!!

My saturday weigh-in 208.9... not a lot, but better than nothing.

Ok, I'm doing my weekly weigh in a day late.

Last week- 151

Today- 144.4

Goal by the end of summer: 120

I love this post, and it is so nice to know there are others out there in the same situation! I'm 30, 241lbs, and my fiance and I are planning to start trying for a baby in June 2010. My lightest weight in the last decade was 178, and I have had a doctor tell me the ideal weight for me is 160. I know I will gain 50-60lbs when pregnant (my kid sister has a similar body type & has been pregnant twice - this is what she gained, though her babies were tiny, 5lbs and 6lbs - she also lost dramatically in the three months after her pregnancies). My biggest fear is going over 300lbs. I don't think I could ever come back from that, and I want to have 3 or 4 healthy children in the next 12 years. I really, really want to be around 180lbs when we try for a baby. That's 61lbs to lose, but then I have about 15 months to do it. I've been on-again, off-again dieting and exercising for the last year - after gaining almost 30lbs my first two years of law school - and have been hovering around 235-240 for a year.

I've lost significant weight before - my top weight was around 290lbs. My biggest problems are motivation, self-discipline and consistancy. In every other area of my life I set goals and accomplish them, but somehow with the weight loss I consistantly fail. I'll keep checking into this forum for motivation - I wish you all success, and good health.

Hello everyone!!!

How's everyone else?

Hello!

Yes, it is weigh in time....

Last week = 167.0

This week = 163.0

We're doin good Amber.

Goodluck to everybody!!!

jheinne-

Good work!  I started out at 170 in March of last year too.  I'm not sure how tall you are; but I'm 5'2-3".  I went from 170 to 140 in a few months it came off fairly quickly, and I remember how I felt the first time I saw 140.  I hope that happens for you soon!  Just seems like we have similar stats and goals. Good luck!

Amber -

Hello! I'm 5'3''. I started out at 186 lbs on January this year (my heaviest). I did lose significant weight back in 2002 (from 163 lbs to 110 lbs - did it in about 5-6 months), but I gained it all back, most of it was when I was in nursing school. I try to work out at least 5 times a week. I have no problem w/ exercise, my real problem is w/ portions. I don't believe in starving myself while trying to lose weight (I just don't have energy to go to the gym when I'm starved), but sometimes I over eat. Also I can't seem to keep track of my calorie intake because I mostly eat Filipino foods (high in fat and sodium). At work I'm always surrounded w/ people that eat so much food but don't gain any weight (lucky them). I try to fight temptation at work by always bringing salad and non fat dressing and walking during my breaks. Hope to know more about you. Good luck.

WEIGH IN TIME........

LAST WEEK = 163.0

THIS WEEK = 161.2

THIS WEEK LOSS = 1.8 LBS

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!!

Hey ladies, sorry I've been gone for a couple of weeks.

SW 2/21 151

CW 3/20 142.4

Lost 8 pounds in a month!  It's more than I expected, but I'm not complaining for sure!

I know it's going to get harder from this point on.  My body always fights me when I get to 140.

Jhenine, nice to know more about you.  I have a portion control problem too, especially when it comes to visiting home.  My family is hispanic, so going home to homemade beans, tortillas, tamales (lard, lard, and lard based), etc. is always a challenge.  Why is it that good home cooking is so fatty and so good?  I hear you on the Filipino food, I've only had it once, but it was AMAZING.

I've been trying to think of ways to control my portions better:

1. Don't make extra food (which is a pain)

2. Drink a big glass of water before I eat?

3. Have a small cup of soup before a meal?  Like a veggie broth type soup?

I've also had a problem with wine.  I love to have a glass or two with dinner and it's really hard to want to take in those calories.

Hope everyones doing good!

SATURDAY WEIGH IN (THOUGH ITS NOW MONDAY. LOL)

LAST WEEK - 161.2

THIS WEEK - 157.2

THIS WEEK LOSS = 4 LBS

MONTHLY LOSS = 12 LBS. (HURRAYYY!!!)

GOODLUCK AND BEST WISHES TO ALL.

A little late but would love to join. I'm 30, 5'5" and 166lbs. I've been married for 7 months and am planning on starting a family at the end of this year. For some reason I keep thinking to myself that I need to lose some weight before this, which sounds so silly and am glad it seems that I'm not the only one!

I discovered I had endometriosis last year and by the next week of I went into surgery to have it removed. After that I was on a hellish 6-month hormone treatment, which I would not like to repeat ever again. There is perhaps a link between diet and weight so I would like to change it to prevent such a recurrence - or any questions to myself in whether I should have made changes sooner or such.

My next check up is in May and would like to lose weight by then because I've kept gaining since the wedding. My doctor mentioned it to me on my last check up in November and I felt so embarrassed. I was 154 lbs in mid-August, by mid-December I was 161lbs and after Xmas & New Years I was up to my all-time high of 167. I'd like to get back to 154 and then have an additional 20 lbs to lose.

My workouts are 3 days strength split (legs, shoulders/chest, back/biceps), 1 day workout DVD (kickboxing) and 2-3 days cardio. I'm having trouble getting my cardio in because we don't have the equipment in our place but this week may change since hubs is also wanting to get fit. He's planning on starting in with workouts at the apartment gym. I'll tag along and use the bike or treadmill then.
