Losing weight while traveling?

Quote  |  Reply

I hope it's even possible.

I have been in Italy for awhile now and a week ago, I began a new diet. Since I cannot accurately measure my caloric intake because the only place to eat are resturaunts, I have been trying to eat very little. For instance, today I had half of a pizza, a piece of grilled chicken, an apple, a glass of wine, and a small vegetable souffle. I have also found a gym where I go and work out for an hour each day. After a week, the scale has said I have gained weight. This is very non-motivating. It's very difficult, while traveling, to count calories or even eat sporadically throughout the day. Does anyone have any advice?

i myself stopped counting calories.  i was an oevreater before and if i logged everyuthing i felt like, i don'T know, seeing it made me hungrier.  so now i just eat when i'm hungry, until i'm full.  use that logic.  and YOU'RE ON VACATION!!! enjoy it!!!  last time i was on vacation i didn't watch what i ate and i lost 2 pounds: because i followed the previous advice.  instead of an hour at teh gym: take logn walks and see the sites.  or maybe job u teh stairs or a museum/thing/you know what i mean.  stressing about food only makes things worse.  on vacation, you should be as stress free as possible.  so i guess that's my advice: stop worrying, eat when you want until you're full, enjoy yourself, meet enw people, have lots of fun.  you deserve it!

on a side note: sounds like you're undereating, hence the weight gain.

I studied abroad in London for 3 months and couldn't afford a gym.  I went for a run about twice a week and walked a lot.  I maintained my weight, ate a ton.  So it is possible.  Just make sure you are doing lots of stuff.  Tourism burns loads of calories if you are walking!

I lost a lot of weight when I was traveling in India for two weeks last year- more than 10 lbs.  I was not even on a diet, but one girl in our group was and she insisted on us skipping dinner on some nights.  She actually ended up gaining during the trip, I don't know how, but then the other girl and I lost a lot of weight.  We also went on some tours where they only gave you about 15 minutes to go find a meal or some limited time before you had to get back or be left behind.  The weather was 110 degrees each day and there was a lot of walking.  Besides that, in most of the restaurants the portion size was pretty small and the food was almost all vegetarian.  I have to say, by the end of the trip I was feeling great.  I did not see a brownie or chocolate chip cookie, or any dessert I would like for most of the time I was there except when we went out of our way to find western food.

Have you read the book Eat, Pray, Love?  I liked it a lot, and she writes a lot about how delicious the food was in Italy.  I'm not sure what your travel plans are, but maybe enjoy the delicious food in Italy and enjoy being in such a beautiful country, it sounds like you are eating very sensibly and keeping in shape!

When I was much younger I went to Europe and to save money was eating meals of bread with a piece of cheese in the hostel and maybe a piece of fruit, I lost a lot of weight on that trip too but it was more because I was trying to save money on food.

i went to newyork this summer for 10 days and lost 6 pounds..probably some water weight.  but pretty much we walked a lot!! so try doing as MUCH walking as you can and if fitting in gym sounds great if you can manage to do so.  As for the food, make sure you are eating if you are hungry and just try to use precaution when choosing meals..no heavy cream sauces and have as many veggies in ur dishes as possible. but u sound like u r doing pretty good..a pound of two u could just be water or something

I'm currently studying abroad in Australia and have lost 19 lbs since I got here....mostly because that's when I started on CC, but still.  Australian dining hall food has been the most horrendous thing I've probably ever had in my life, but probably helps with the weight loss.  I was exercising for a while when I first got here because it was 'winter' here, but now it's summer and it's too hot to walk outside to class half of the time (I can't afford the gym).  So hang in there!  You seem to be on the right track.
