Loss of appetite after a workout

Quote  |  Reply

There are times when I do physical activities for several hours and then notice that I loose my appetite for my next meal.  I know that I should eat something since my body needs calories and proteins for my muscles to repair and grow.  In these cases should I just force myself to eat.  My caloric intake would be very low for the amount of energy burned if I don't eat.

Any one have some advice?

Yes, you need to eat. Think of a yummy snack that you can have only after a workout. Of course it has to be healthy. I love cheese, so I have an ounce of lower-fat Cabot cheddar and an apple, or peanut butter and apple. I also like plain yogurt with splenda and some fruit (sliced peach, blueberries, whatever I have in the fridge). Make sure it has protein.

Thanks...I guess a little protein and carb snack may get my appetite back.  Just find it strange that I loose that sensation after a heavy workout.

You need to eat protein and carbs within 2 hours after a workout. Doesn't have to be a full meal but eat.

I have the SAME problem. I use to work out at night and that would become a problem because i wouldn't be hungry till 9 or 10, and i never want to eat after 7pm. So now I work out in the morning around 5 (ugh i know) but by the time 8 rolls around im hungry and it works out perfectly!

Thanks...

That is exactly how I feel.  I workout right after work and then I have no appetite for a good dinner.  And don't want to eat late at night.  Great suggestion on switching the workout time but 5:00 AM?  yuck!

Keep up the good work,

Teresa

When I get home from a harder workout (usually around 7:30pm, 3 days/week), I am never hungry. However, I've found that if I don't eat or only eat a little, I feel even worse the next morning. My trainer recommended protein bars (specifically Zone bars). She said to eat one when I get home from the gym and then, try to eat a small meal 1-2 hours later.

I've been trying this for about a week and so far I'm really happy. I eat the protein bar around 7:30, then take my shower and do whatever I need to do. By the time I'm ready to eat my small meal (about 8:30-8:45), I'm just hungry enough to eat. I think it helps that the small meal can be mostly carbs and doesn't have to include protein (because I ate it in the bar) as protein REALLY fills me up.
