Loss of libido??

Quote  |  Reply

Did anyone else find that when they were underweight they lost their libido?  I think this has happened to me and am wondering if its my weight thats causing it..I'm 19 5"7 and 107-110 and am working on gaining weight.  Also, how long after reaching a healthy weight did you get it back?

YES YES AND YES!!! im more or less the same height as you (just under 5'8) and used to weigh around 107 having NO LIBIDO, NOTHING AT ALL! I am at around 114 now and it seems to be coming back a bit, but not entirely...

i think that is normal because your body doesn't want you to reproduce if you can't even feed yourself.  i think that is also why periods stop.

I'm dealing with the opposite!! I'm 5'2 110 to 108 lbs and trying to lose at least 3 or 5 more pounds and I don't feel very comfortable with myself, my libido is going down

YES, that has happened to me as well & I always felt a bit embarrassed to admit it.  When I had an eating disorder, my libido was completely gone & it gradually returned after I gain a healthy amount of weight.  (For me, I had to reach 122 pounds at 5'8 before I noticed a difference).  Also, having a positive body image & self confidence seems to be a key--I definitely did not feel good about myself during my eating disorder days, so that probably didn't help matters.

I heard somewhere that can be related to a hormone imbalance which is sometimes caused by the body not getting enough fat. Females need at least 30% fat in their diet. I would give that a try..

My boyfriend and I broke up when I was my lowest, 94 pounds at 5'7, because I was never ever in the mood and then when I got up to around 115 I noticed a difference...good luck!

Thanks everyone for the replies!!  It helps a lot to know I'm not the only one going/has been through this!

ugh, yes, loss of a social life

^^ oh yes...plus the libido... :*(

I watched on BBC today "you are what you eat" its about overweight people (not underweight) but I think it may still apply. The crazy BBC lady was telling this overweight couple that because their diets were nutritionally void (all crappy food) they weren't getting the vitamins that they needed, and thats why their libido was in the dumps.

The main thing she said was Zinc. Try associating more nutritious foods into your diet along with healthy fats like almonds and avocados and see if that helps.

Thanks for that suggestion! I eat quite a lot of healthy fats usually but ill try to eat foods with zinc in them
