I figured I would put this into a thread as I have explained this to quite a few people and the typing gets repetative. I will explain my story and how I did it.. this is what is working for me....
Summary: I have lost 107 lbs since Jan 1, 2007
Jan 1, 07 weighed : 363 lbs
July 27 (today) - 256 lbs ( loss of 107 lbs)
And it started like this: I went to the doctor Nov 27, 06 said I weighed 363 lbs.. NO WAY.. NOT ME..........................
I watched a video on New Years eve of my family on Christmas Day. That was not me.... I Truly thought that in my brain.... that was the night my life would change! I decided then... Lets do it. Tomorrow starts a NEW YEAR! and I did.
Ever wonder how many calories you should eat in one day? Look up your BMR (Basal Metobolic Rate) = the # of calories your body burns in a 24 hour period with your body at full rest! . It all depends on your current weight, height & age.
Mine now is about 2000 cal. Thats means my body burns 2000 cal a day even if I NEVER got out of bed.... So.. If I eat only 2000 cal a day.... EVERYTHING I do all I am doing is burning calories! Everything from waking up, to driving, to dressing, to grocery shopping, to working, to chasing kids, to showering.... burning extra fat! Every 3500 calories you burn... you burn a pound of stored fat. So if you eat nothing but your BMR, then of course your burning more calories that you eat, because what you eat, ( your BMR) your body burns NATURALLY to live! If you eat 2000 cal (MINUS) what your body burns automatically (2000) then you have ZERO calories left. Everything you do your burning calories, even digesting food your burning calories.... so of course you will have a Negative Calories Number. This # is called your calorie deficit. I can help you figure out your calorie deficit as well. I know this is long, but I have been helping everyone that emails me, and its easier to refer them to this, and then everyone who wants there own BMR or Calorie Deficit to email me with your #'s and I will respond back . I hope this is helpful.. Questions PLEASE ASK!!!!

I eat 6-7 times a day...
6:30 - 7:00 AM / 9:30-10:00 / NOON / 2:00- 2:30 / 4:45- 5:00 ( before I leave work - cause by the time I go to the gym, I dontget home till 8 Pm, and I dont want to eat that late) and a snack at 7:30 - 8:00 ....
Snacks never go above 250 calories
Remember this.. If it comes in a box or a bag DON't EAT IT... If God didnt give it to us naturally, then dont eat it. There are slim exceptions mainly being yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, I do eat All Brab / Bran Buds for my fiber..
SHOP THE OUTSIDE PERIMITER OF THE GROCERY STORE. THAT IS THE FRESH / KEEP COLD ISLES.

how do you manage burning 1200 cals on an eliptical for one hour straight??
niss4~~ Remember I weigh (now 256) so I burn almost twice as much as mom mom in an hour and she weighs 160 ish.... I set my incline on 6 and my resistance on 25... THAT IS NOW!!!! When i started I could only burn 300-500 in an hour... on 0 incline and 0 resistance... I upped it as I felt my legs were getting ahead of me......
The information that you all have provided is the best I have heard so far and it makes absolute sense. I have on some days been starving my body to the point where I get headaches.
So if I understand. I should definetely be consuming enough calories to at least make my BMR. As long as I make healthy food choices and keep up with my excercise routine then I am gauranteed to lose weight. Not only will I lose weight, but I will no put on weight the minute that I eat a slice of cake at an office party. Oh yeah and I will prevent my body from burning muscle which if vital to boost my metabolism.
This information is a revelation and I thank you for sharing it.

I have just one question. When I am calculating my BMR should I rate myself as sedentary or light activity? For the past 3 weeks I have been working out 3-5 times per week. Which has worked I have lost 6 pounds exactly today, but I do work in an office at a desk all day.
What I have been doing is going out for a short walk at lunch time just to get my circulation going and keep my motivation up.

barnespa~~ I ALWAYS go off of the lightest.. PEOPLE onhere will tell you to caount back calories and all... BUT if you count them all back by eating more... WHAT GOOD DID YOU DO? You need a deficit! Email me your#'s.. height weight and age.. I will get you the BMR I would use, and send you the link!
looosing, thats a really big improvement from 300-500, must have been tough, you should be proud

Trisha, Can you help me? I'm 33, 192 lbs and 5'7. Funny I used to be 5'8. I'd love to lose 65 lbs. I've already started my new life routine. I hit my local Y 4 days a week doing 45 mins on the treadmill and 30 mins on the bike. Tried the elliptical and got discouraged.. too tough right now. I've decided to follow the 'learn to run' thread and have joined another weight loss challenge on this site today. I've committed myself to a diet of whole grains, fresh fruit, veggies, chicken and fish. Occasionally I'll have a zone bar or eat something I shouldn't but not often at all. Today was really bad because I didn't have time to eat at all. I managed my coffee in the morning and about 2c of fruit during the day. Had a healthy balanced supper. Would like to get in the habit of many small meals or snacks thru out the day and I'd also like to start counting my calories (as best as I can).
One thing that is discouraging is that when I am working out, I'll sweat up a storm on both the treadmill and bike.. but with 50 mins on the treadmill.. (fast walking pace) it says I only burned 200 calories. How can that possibly be correct? 30 mins on the bike will only burn 100 calories and that is doing a hills program with decent resistance.
Any advice would be appreciated! You are all doing so well and I love the support here!

loosingthepounds ~ you are phenominal! I tried so hard to stay on track all weekend after recieving your help with my BMR count and was able to have a loss of 2#'s! What a thrill it was for me to step on the scale this morning and see that! This post has been the most helpful information and support. I'm so thankful I found this website and that the people here that have also joined are so helpful and encouraging! Thanks again and Happy Monday! =o)

volite~~ I will sure try to help you... I have emailed you your BMR that I looked up. You seem to be doing good on your "What Im going to eat" plan... but you have to eat..... If you dont, you will mess yourself all up. I realized how important it is once you start on a schedule when I was off kilter on the weekends, and I wasnt losing...... I would eat within all of my guidelines, but if I didnt eat every 2-3 hours like I do Mon-Thur when Im sitting at a desk.... then I felt like I was missing something. I started really tryinghard to stick to eating every 2-3 hours even when Im busy on the weekends and boy does it help! I dont gain 2 lbs and then Monday morning feellike Im losing the same 2 lbs again Mon & Tues.....

okay, way off topic - but how do I send an email? When I go to my mailbox, it just has inbox, sent and saved, and I don't see anywhere to compose a message or anything. i feel like an idiot, i'm sure it's right in front of me but I can't figure it out.
i weigh 335lbs.i lose 20 and gain 40 back. im a mother of 5 all but one child is over weight.i feel like a failure to myself and my kids. i will give your method a try.if i can help myself then maybe i can help my family.---doris

you are doing so great. have you gone down any more since the last posting? i have lost 25 lb since about the middle of may, and i have about 100 lb left to go. i think my bmr is about 1900. starting the 1st of aug, i have been trying to stay around 1200 calories a day, im not counting every calorie i just try to eat about 300 at meals, 150 or so for snacks. most of the time i work out in the morning and by the end of my workout i am starting to feel a bit weak, maybe a heavyer breakfast would work better. do you have any ideas? thanks: )
doris~~ You can do this!!!!!! Make it fun for you and your kids..... It doesnt have to be a CHORE so to speak.. Find new recipes and let the kids help cook it..... snack healthy foods.... If you need any help..........PLEASE let me know!!!!!!

Hello everyone. I'm new to this site and would like to congratulate everyone on their weight loss. I'm 22 years old 5'5 and weight 270lbs. I really need to lose weight and get healthy. I'm having trouble understanding the BMR and deficit that I've been hearing. When I enter my data it says I should be eating over 2000 calories a day! There's no way I can eat that much. Could someone help me figure this out? I have already started to count my calories and try to eat more healthy things and lots of water, which is hard for me because I never used to drink water. Thanks for all your help. I look forward to being successful and healthy.
