Who has lost weight and REALLY kept it off!!!
Hi I'm what most call a "yo-yo" dieter. As getting in my upper 20's I realize that I'm not able to keep the weight off like I could when I was younger. As a result I find myself 30 pounds heavier and with a "spare tire" waist (thank God my hips are really wide, so it slightly camflouges my ugly mid-dift).
Anyway, I trying to lose at leat 15 pounds and keep it off, but I can't stick to a diet that I truly am comfortable with. My life is pretty hectic so it's hard to get exercise in. So what I've been doing is 4 15-minute intervals of jogging up the stairs through out the day at work. I don't think I'm a junk food person, but I can't say that I eat the healthiest food either.
I just need some advice from those that was able to get the weight off and keep it off and how did you do it. What were your tricks?
I've added new commentary to this post 9/10/08
Such great advice so far!!! I wish more people were posting, but I guess that means a lot of us dieters aren't keeping the lost weight off.
Well these are my stats:
5'5" (I was 150 lbs in high school I'd be happy to get to 165 or 170)
Start weight 188 (8/26/08)
Current weight 186 (9/10/08)
So I lost two pounds yay!!! But this is only due to just really cutting back on certain foods w/no exercise. So imagine what will happen if I put exercise in the mix. I've been slacking from my orginal plan.
Goal weight 165 (12/17/08) - That's hubby's birthday and I have something special planned.
So I don't really know how to start a group but I would love some support from those that have lost the weight and those that want to loose the weight.
Who's with me??!!!!
I am probablynotthe best to compare, but I have lost 29-30 pounds since Sept. 26, 2007 and so far have not had any trouble keeping it off. (An occasional up a couple pounds, but those are easy to keep at bay) I don't particularly eat healthy, but try to not really bad foods. I have found foods that fit with my day....time, calories, eating habits (I am an evening muncher) and it seems to work well. I am horrible at exercise, but need to before have a stress test the first of c......it is so boring and there are things I'd rather be doing! I Guess my be to find some low cal foods you like and can live with day after day and see how it works. I think you CAN keep it off!
So pretty much your saying just a change in your overall diet help keep the weight off. What exercises did you do?
SW: 165.4 lbs on Apr 16, 2006
Weight on my wedding day (Nov 4, 2006): 136 lbs
Weight in Aug 2007: 127 lbs
Weight in Aug 2008: 127 lbs
So yeah, i think I managed to keep it off for a year and now i'm trying to get to my goal of 118 lbs or so.
I lost the bulk of the weight on another site though.
ps: I'll be 28 this Dec :)
Tricks? I changed my lifestyle completely. I'm a semi-vegetarian and eat 1200-1500 cal a day. I don't eat fried foods or any "whites"; i don't eat fast food, i don't drink soda, i never eat sweets (including chocolate);
As for exercise, I combine HIIT on my stepper (15 min maybe 3 times a week) wt walks, tennis (in the summer) and aqua fitness (soon)
I work full time and don't have any kids.
Hi, two years ago I lost 70 lbs and have managed to keep it off... give or take a pound or two! I'm a full vegetarian (no seafood) and find if I don't eat too many 'simple' carbohydates I can afford a few slip ups. My goal is 130 (currently 155) I find any exercise is a bonus when trying to lose weight... i'm particually sold on the circuit training for the inch loss & shaping alone. Trying not to have a blow out is the hardest thing... its so easy to do. But one meal alone can't make you fat... just think of that when you trip and pick yourself up again. ![]()
I was a big time yo-yoer. I would lose 15 - 20 lbs and then gain back 25. I lost about 35 lbs in 2005 and have kept it off. What I found to work is lose the weight slowly and make life changes not just start a diet. For example one of my life changes was to start eating breakfast another was pack my food for work breakfast and lunch. I had a bad habit of not eating breakfast and then getting really hungry at about 10 or 11 and buying a candy bar or muffin for the vending machine and then I would buy fast food for lunch and eat something else from the vending machine in the afternoon. By forcing myself to think about what I will eat throughout the day and limiting myself to only what I have with me prevents extra eating (usually it was out of boredomnot hunger anyways). As for exercise I just started making that apart of my life again I started slow and just made life changes. I walk to my bus stop instead of making my husband drive me, I walk at lunch with some people in my office and now I have added working out in my home gym 30 - 45 minutes a day before I go to work (this is a little harder).
So I guess my advice to you would be start slow make life changes that you can live with and don't just think about losing weight but changing your life. &nb sp;
Lost about 30LB and have kept it off for about 7-8 years. In the last 2 years have been at my ideal weight. For me it is exercise and clean eating.
At home, though, we eat frozen pizza and ice cream. I have yet to gain back a single pound that I've lost. Except during my rag. I bloat up about two or three pounds, but it goes away after I have a cup of coffee.
I've lost 50lbs over the course of a year and a half and I am still losing. I had a 5 month period where I ate whatever I felt like and I never gained anything more than a couple pounds back. I think it's because after you've eaten a certain way for so long, your body and mind become accustomed to it.
Like even if I tried to, I could never eat as much as I used to. My mind and stomach literally wont let me. I've actually gotten physically sick from eating too much unhealthy food in one day whereas before it never would have phased me. It's just programmed into my body that I'm not supposed to eat that much anymore.
You just have to try to get in the habit of eating less and eating healthier. And try to weigh yourself every week to make sure if you're gaining anything to cut back down.
i lost 30 (from 167), then gained back 10, and have been fighting with that same 10 for about a year now. right now i'm down about 22 from my highest point, but i haven't gone above 150 again, so i feel like i'm doing pretty well. just have to keep re-setting that upper threshhold, you know? once i get below 145 in a real way, that will be my new upper limit. then i aim to get and stay below 140, etc.
for me, it's not about a particular "diet" - it's more about portion control and staying active. and it's about not avoiding the scale, because when i do that, it's always a sign that i'm misbehaving ;)

Who's with me??!!!!
Highest weight: 152 in 2005
Start weight of SERIOUS weight loss journey: 142 in October of 2005
Current weight: 169ish in September of 2008
Goal weight: 140-150 by end of 2008!
Let's see, at my heaviest I was like 240, I think at one point I was down to 170, then I ballooned up to 220 or so. This was a well over 6 years ago so I don't know if everything is exact. That was my first bout with dieting.
About 3 years ago, I started being more conscious about eating and exercise, and managed to drop down to about 200, but hit a plateau. In November of last year, I joined a gym, and starting reading about exercise and nutrition. Right now I am at 160 and still losing. Unlike my previous attempts, this is a major lifestyle change for me, so I can safely say the pounds are staying off this time.
I've lost 175 pounds and have kept it off for 10 months. Still learning how to keep it off for good, each day is a battle with me and food, but it takes a LOT to re-learn portion control :)
I lost 130 of the 190 I had to lose and I have kept all of the 130 off for two years.
I suppose if I actually put real effort into this again I would lose those pesky last 5 lbs! :-)
the advice give already is great. you really just have to change your whole way of eating, retrain yourself to know what healthy food is and a healthy portion. it's not a diet, it's life :-)
and exercise helps the most. hard to get it into life sched. soemtimes, i know :-) but try to make it a part of your daily routine and soon it'll just be part of everything else, just like brushing your teeth :-)
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
