Lost Weight...Tons of Exercise...BMR and Calories...anyone?

Quote  |  Reply

Ok I wanted to ask the question in this forum because I think I will get the best answer! In the past year I lost over 130lbs. I completely changed my diet (high protein, rich complex carbs and no empty calories or as limited as possible) I don't cheat, I don't snack...and life is great! I am addicted to endurance events and triathlons more specifically! So here is the question...

When I was losing all the weight I was limiting my calorie intake to around 1,200 calories a day...I started at 6'3 321+ lbs!...I am now one year later at 6'3 (didn't shrink any yet) 198lbs...I run around 30 miles a week (sometimes more, sometimes less), I swim a bit, and bike anywhere from 30 - 100 miles in a week. I am now eating over 3,000 calories a day and not gaining any weight...I also have been taking in over 300 grams of protein everyday! I feel great, but a little like I am creating a monster...anyone have any advice, or a similar story?

Seems reasonable to me. When I was training in cycling I was burning 8000-12000 calories per week cycling alone - this translates into an extra 1000+ per day, which would bring me over 3000 - and I'm female. Keep it up! Just remember to continue to make good food choices, and if you cut back on your training, cut back on your intake correspondingly (what I DIDN't do and the reason I'm now on this site!)

If you are enjoying what you are doing, don't sweat it!  If you are obsessing over your intake or expenditure to the point of worry, then you need to find a way to chill out a little.  If you find yourself in behaviors like a workaholic has, to the point that you exclude yourself from other activities then you need to diversify.

Actually you can get physically addicted to exercise, ever heard of "runner's high?"  It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just when your brain produces endorphins to allow you to combat the discomfort from extreme physical stress.
