A lot of protein makes me sick. does this happen to anyone else?

Quote  |  Reply

Anytime I eat a lot of protein at one meal I don't feel good, and I feel like I'm going to get sick, like my stomach doesn't want to digest it.

I had toast and peanut butter today, with only 10 almonds for breakfast, and after I had to lay in bed for a few hours and drink a lot of water.

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you know why this happens to me? I wanted to start doing more strength training, so I need more protein than I normally eat, and I don't want to feel sick all the time.

Erm... I'm no expert but that does not sound very protein rich.

I think there are more healthy fats in that meal than anything else. It's a good and nutritious breakfast, a little too low cal maybe though...but then I love my big breakfasts.

I think in that snack, you would have gotten only around 10 grams protein, maybe 22 grams carb and 17 grams healthy fats. Maybe look in to getting your protein in other ways?

Possibly it was all the healthy fats that made you feel full?

P.S. I love, love, love my cottage cheese, whey protein, raisins and almond meal. It has around 26 grams protein and lots of other goodness. But best of all it tastes like marzipan cheese cake YUMMY!!!

Nuts are a very rich food and you could simply be finding them indigestible.... many people do.  Does the same thing happen if you have some scrambled eggs, for example?

Try different options for protein beyond nuts.  There are lots to choose from.

Have you tried any of these, and, if so, did you get sick?

  • boneless, skinless turkey and/or chicken
  • beans from dry or can such as red, black, pinto, etc.
  • lean beef
  • eggs or egg whites
  • salmon or sardines or tuna
  • regular cheese or nonfat cheese
  • milk
  • high protein nutrition bars or drink
  • tofu or soy milk or beans
  • yogurt

Those foods and many others are rich in proteins.
