A LOT of weight to lose, and looking for buddies / support
Hi,
I just found this site tonight, and it looks very promising. I'm 33 years old, and have been fat for most of my life. My wife and I recently had our first child, and I've decided that I need to get in shape so that I'll be around and healthy for him for a long time. Anyway, it's daunting, considering how out of shape I let myself become. I want to lose over 170 pounds. In the 5 days I've been doing this, I've already lost 5, so I'm on my way. As much as I would love it, I don't think I'll be able to keep that pace up of a pound a day. My goal is to lose the 170 pounds over two years.
Anyway, this seems like a good site to get support and stay motivated. That's always been my problem in the past. It's easy to be motivated at first, but keeping that motivation when I've been on a plateau can be tough. So I'm hoping to find the support I need to keep me on track, as well as hopefully helping others to do the same.

Congratulations on making a courageous decision! You have it within your power to make a change.
In August, my doctor asked me to lose 10-20 lbs, because my cholesterol was high. I lost 25, and brought my cholesterol within acceptable ranges.
I had tried losing weight before, but nothing worked until I stared counting calories. This has also encouraged me to exercise more. It's amazing what a 30 minute walk can do for you.
Start by watching your calories. Add some exercise. Begin adding better foods to your diet. Weigh regularly. Chart your progress. Be patient, and it will all make a difference.
Good luck!

Hey, way to go.....I joined this site last year and was surprised on how fast I lost weight by counting calories. I've just begun to get back into it again after taking the last few months off. I discovered I hit a weight plateau, and for some reason I wasn't losing anymore weight. So, I got off the diet (a bit) and found that I was automatically counting cals in my head whenever I ate something or picked something up at a grocery store. That's a good thing, because I didn't really gain any weight either. I lost over 50 pounds last year in just 6 months thanks to this site, and don't worry....you will lose it too, just dont try to lose too much too fast like I tried to or you will hit a plateu like I did. I was losing weight at about a pound a day...the biggest was 2.3 lbs in one day...big mistake!! my body went into emergency mode and refused to drop anymore weight. Anyways, that's my story, don't do the same thing, take your time and do it right......Good Luck
I am 34 and also was overweight for pretty much my entire life. Through the Calorie-Count program (namely: eating healthy, portion control, logging calories, and regular exercise,) I have lost 120 pounds since March 2006, with about 15 more to lose to get to my goal.
This program DOES work. You're off to a great start by setting a realistic time frame. You are correct in that you will not lose weight as rapidly as you are right now; in fact, almost everybody loses the first bit very quickly, because it's mostly water weight. But if you follow your program, make healthy food choices, and get regular exercise, it will come off. I have averaged between 1 and 2 pounds lost per week. It's not easy, but it's also not as hard as you might think, once you get in the swing of things.
Best of luck to you! :)
