i love GAP clothes sizes

just popped into Gap to get some new winter trousers as its freezing here. Tried on a 6 expecting it to be equal to UK 10 but too big, left the shop with a perfectly fitting pair of Uk 8 trousers. the label says 4US, is it wrong of me to leave the label on hanging out the back so everyone sees im offically slim even though i have the worlds largest bottom.

why dont other stores cut clothes like this, i know its just a number but it makes me happy? I tried on a pair of Dolce Gabana trousers yesterday and a 38 eurpoean which is supposed to be a UK10/US6 didnt even meet at the fly id have to drop a 10lbs to get the buttons to meet, walked out feeling fat and disgusting after being told that thats the biggest they do!

why do trousers have to strech so much? Bought these damm trousers on tuesday, finally accepting that all mine are too small and my weight loose is taking so long i needed a new work pair. Figured id buy a cheapish pair from gap top last me the next 2 months till im slim again, unfortunately they are now so big they sit on my hips, if i do actually loose weight im sure they'll fall down - what a waste of £50. good thing is when i do loose the weight i can fit into loads of my old clothes and donante all the crap that i dont want and justify a huge shopping spree

ya i was really surprised when j crew did it i few years ago,  i was a size 8 there and the next season i was a size 4.  and the sales lady who was over weight was giddy with joy when expalining how all the new sies will work...i was like ok but what about all the skinny people what are they gonna do.  i dont know.  what did the skinny girls do I eventually think they will strat adding negative sizes cause even though most of america keeps getting bigger( not all of us...we are trying to be healthy) there will always be super skinny girls.  And i though j crew being as pricey as it is would be above the vanity sizes...or maybe i an the only one who considers j crew pricey.
Bobo, yes jcrew is pricey. I am laughing because I always considered Jcrew the place to go if you are skinny and have no hips and thighs (i.e., more of a junior shape, except you want grown-up clothes)! Compared to Ann Taylor, where you really have to have hips and thighs, or forget it.

I think when Jcrew went to vanity sizing was when they also added petites. So the petites (theoretically) are there for the smaller end. This is just my theory. Unfortunately, Jcrew doesn't know how to do petites. And they quickly abandoned the idea, except for a few items sold on the website.

I am currently a size 0 at Jcrew (5'0" tall, 107 lbs) and the size 0 fits big on me. This is one reason I'm thinking of going on maintenance - I won't have a lot of options left if I lose more.

As to your concern about america getting bigger and clothing sizing following, I think they'll always offer sizing for the skinnier end. The trouble is that there won't be enough on the rack. Because the sizes mean something else, too, I am told they mean the number of items in that size that a store will carry on the rack. So they will have 1 size 0, 2 size 2's, 4 size 4's, 6 size 6's and so on. So if you are a size 0 or 2, you have to get in there early and grab your garment ... don't wait for a sale. :-(
