Love this site... but I feel like the only liberal. True?
I love this site (as I've said above.) The community is wonderful, helpful, concerned, and generally just great, and I find the tools are super helpful. I've learned so much about eating right and being healthy here.
But.. I feel a bit like the only left-leaning cc'er. My suspicions began when, in a thread where an unexpectedly pregnant cc'er was asking the do-I-or-do-I-not have an abortion question, and then all of the these folks chimed in with how wrong it is, and just how much she will regret it forever. I was aghast that all these folks who have always been so supportive on other topics could be so judgemental on another. Then came someone who was terrified to mention that she had gained weight after quitting drugs - again, someone who sensed that the community here would not be receptive to someone who had used cocaine, and was upset about the resulting weight gain that is common (and depressing) among recovering addicts. Then today I see this huge thread about how it's super great that McCain picked a very young, very socially conservative running mate, because wouldn't it be awesome if she ended up as prez? Yes, I would love it if another socially conservative candidate were elected to the highest office in the land. It's gone so well these past eight years (please note the sarcasm.)
So, anyways, just a rant. Feeling a little bleak here.
EDIT: I'm getting some feedback about being judgemental.. that was not my intention. The reason I rarely speak up about my political leanings is because I hate the bitter division, and senseless arguing that seems to ensue. I had just been feeling that any sort of leftie-ness 'round these parts got flamed real fast, and felt sad that the same sorts of division often occurs among the wonderful cc community. I can't say that I've ever encountered a cc'er I didn't like. You guys are all great! Just wanted to remind us all to be open minded - to both sides of the fence ![]()
Ha, you felt out of place, think about me! I am a hardcore Conservative Republican! Talk about feeling out of place.
Side note...................
Anyone notice how much Obama looks like Alfred E Newman form Mad Magazine, Just think about that next time you see him.
One other........
I do not think Obama should EVER put his name and JFK in the same sentence, that is a slap in the face for JFK. He could not wipe JFK's feet!
Putting him in office would be suicide for Americans, you think prices are high now, just wait if he gets into office. Bush was not an apple pie and perfect, don't get me wrong. However, when you have a candidate that all he can say is "change" we need "change" with nothing solid to back it up, (no history of doing anything in politics) and no "real" plan. His plan............bring home the troops from a war that is working, look to alternative fuels he says, HELLO we have, unfortunately every time you talk about something OTHER than CORN, there is a lobby group complaining about it. No nuk (based on stupid movies), No wind (might hurt the birds that fly into them) and on and on. For every 1 scientist that says corn is good for fuel, there are 10 that say no way, and that it is worse for our environment. Why take FOOD out of our mouths and put it in or gas tanks? DUH, WAKE UP!
Simple terms..........we have oil and we have gas, why must we BUY from others? Example, I have a garden, I grow veggies, but instead of using those I go to the store and buy them, HELLO! Not one drop of oil was spilled during Katrina, the oil and gas industry has gotten very, very good at ensuring that does not happen. On top of that, we are not allowed to drill just off the coast of Florida, however every other country that has the resources is scarfing up the reserves and then for a grand old price will sell it to us! Common sense people, common sense. YES, I agree we need to look to and USE alternative power and fuels, but the lobbyist won't let us. Please don't tell me about the "plots" that the lobbyist will allow companies to drill on. Those "plots" are NON productive and would cost MORE than any oil of gas that could be gotten out.
Final note.........
I have Carbon credits for sale for those of you that feel they need to offset their usage. Just let me know and I can send you the receipt for them after you send me the money. For $25.00 you can buy enough credits to go through about 6 months, each are renewable for another 6 months. That will cover your entire family! Make yourself feel better, BUY TODAY! All monies are used toward supporting carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects, Seriously.
Dave the Happy Republican
That's funny, because I DEFINITELY think there are more liberals than conservatives here. by far.

I think you better take a look at this link Mr. Conservative.

Yeah, Obama does kinda look like the Mad Magazine guy.
JFK was pretty much a lame duck president. The best thing he did was to try to take power away from The Fed. Didn't work because he was killed, but whatever. What else did JFK do that was so good?
Obama wouldn't be suicide for Americans. It doesn't matter who is in office. We're all screwed.
How is the conflict (it's not a war!) in Iraq working?
I think corn is a terrible idea for fuel too.
We buy crude oil from other countries, not gasoline. We buy crude and sell gas.
Ha! Carbon credits are funny.
I'm one of those Old School Republicans. We don't need to get into what all that means, but it regularly puts me at odds with the GOP. It does, however, mean that I don't act like a jerks and come into a thread asking "where are the liberals?" and troll for cheap thrills. But I digress.
I don't think there's a particuarly Liberal or Conservative vibe to CC. I think there is, however, a particuarly little-c conservative vibe here. That may be what you're picking up on.
I'm guessing that the average poster is a 30-50 woman, probably married, possibly with kids, with a strong Christian upbringing (or at least a active life of faith now), living in a medium sized town or suburb. The values here are not going to be particularly "forward," and even if political liberals, fall towards the conservative side in terms of social spectrum.
As a liberal, I've learned to have a thick skin. People seem to think it's ok to get personal and go on the attack when they don't have to look you in the eye.
I'm an Ethical Humanist (look it up), pro-choice, anti war, pro government programs (stop the war and there will be plenty of money), anti big business, and pro union. Guess how much flack I catch every time I open my mouth.
I am super liberal!!!!!!!!! *hugs*
And while I would think that it'd be best for that girl thinking about aborting to go talk to some real counseling about it (make abortion unneccessary, not illegal!) I wouldn't have slammed her for it. It's a difficult decision to even THINK about, you don't need more guilt!
I haven't glanced at that thred recently, but I didn't think it seemed like they said it'd be great if she became president. (I don't think so... but ya know!)
Hopefully you don't live in Georgia like me, so you only experience the sort of thing I experience daily on a website like this. =/ That's really bleak feeling.
I find that when people usually think that something is really liberal and some thinkg really conservative it means that it's pretty neutral, which is how I feel Calorie Count is. Certain people are drawn to certain posts, however. No matter how much support those people with abortion, drug, etc issues get, they will get at least equal amounts of criticism. (And you know those that diagree are quickest to speak.)

I've made up my mind to be a liberal. It's not like I haven't thought about it.
I really hate this attitude. My boyfriend often goes around rooster-crowing his Independent voter registration, but he always votes liberal and most of his opinions align with liberals and therefore I call him a liberal.

Another left wing tree-huggin' pacifica-radio-listenin' progressive here, and a vegetarian to boot and there's lots of veghaters around here. I can take it. It's all about the mix.
Agree with the idea that JFK wasn't actually that good a president.
edit for spelling
JFK may not have been the best or worse, however he founded the Peace Corps and Medicare; he faced down the Russians when it was learned that they had missile bases in Cuba; he backed the Civil Rights movement and space exploration, although both the passage of the Civil Rights Bill and the moon landing occurred after his death.
He also was the first catholic American Irish man 2 b president. With his assignation, JFK changed the world. The birth of 24 hour news coverage began with the assignation. Lyndon Johnson was able to use the idea of JFK to force through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and begin the Great Society initiative (which ended up falling because its funding was given to Vietnam). JFK is seen as a shinning example of virtue and goodness. He is remembered as a strong, charismatic man who gave everything selflessly to the country he loved. It is that legacy that has helped America. The JFK Ideal was used to support voluntary initiatives, humanitarian aid, and human rights.
Now on the flip side, he loved women, he was in bed with the mob, became president most likely due to that fact.
JFK was no prince either, what Pres was? However for Obama to link himself arm in arm with JFK is just wrong, he is tugging at the heart strings of America, instead of looking at where we are today.
Granted no pres, senator, congressman, governor, mayor and the likes is the "perfect" man/women. However as a whole I would much rather have someone that has SOME experience in Washington. Do any of you believe that in whatever field you are in, would be given the top spot in a company after only a year or so of sitting in a board room saying ya or nay? I think that is pipe dreams, the law of the jungle is to work your way up the food chain.
Any ways, good banter is good for the people, we all live by different codes, we all must make choices. Between the candidites, it is either OK or not so OK, neither one of these guys trips my trigger, GO FRED THOMPSON! oops sorry he is out.
Some of my best enemies are good liberals, good boy, good boy, now go lay down. ![]()

I live in georgia....in an affluent neighborhood at that. When one of my neighors put up a obama sign six of my neighbors put up an " obama is fo hippies" sign
...I can't blame them. They want to stay rich and Mccain is the man to make sure that happens. I couldn't care less. Most of them are so selfish they wouldnt spit on someone if their hair was on fire. I had a " Save Darfur" shirt and my neighbor called me a bleeding heart liberal. Ya...i'm a bleeding heart liberal because I care if people are being murdered....it's sick. I'm black ( i know it doesnt really matter) and when we were moving in my neighbors thought my Dad was the mover.she said," Do you know whe the owners will be stopping by?" My dad, " I am the owner." " Oh....are you in the entertainment industry?" hahahahha random story but it cracks me up how ignorant they were. Just m 2 cents :)

ok dave..so your saying obama lacks experience.THEN EXPLAIN MCCAIN'S NEW RUNNING MATE!!! She's only been in office since 2006. I am all for a woman in the white house but that should have been hil ( sorry obama). She is pro-guns...dick cheney is also *obviously* pro guns....need I say more :)
Kucinich would have made an amazing president!
But i'm happy with Having Obama as the next pres.

So basically Dave, the best thing that President Kennedy did was get assassinated? Sure sounds like that to me.
funny how dying suddenly makes the deceased a better person (couldn't resist).
i'm liberal (poor, average, and liberal) because i don't mind paying to live in a country with freedoms such as ours as taxes seem to be a main goat-getter for conservatives. i also don't mind allowing others to live their lives as they see fit so long as it doesn't end or damage other lives. i'm not obama's biggest fan, but i'd vote for anyone to get the republicans out of office at this point.

That man is a wacko. I've been in and around Ohio enough to know.
I am proud to say that I support Obama and the Democratic party as a whole! Unfortunately, I am way to young to vote in this election, but my entire family is going to be voting liberal! I can't believe that McCain said that he considered anyone who was making under 5 million a year middle class! Has he ever met a regular, working person? By the way, who else thought Obama was amazing at the Democratic National convention?
