Love this site... but I feel like the only liberal. True?
I love this site (as I've said above.) The community is wonderful, helpful, concerned, and generally just great, and I find the tools are super helpful. I've learned so much about eating right and being healthy here.
But.. I feel a bit like the only left-leaning cc'er. My suspicions began when, in a thread where an unexpectedly pregnant cc'er was asking the do-I-or-do-I-not have an abortion question, and then all of the these folks chimed in with how wrong it is, and just how much she will regret it forever. I was aghast that all these folks who have always been so supportive on other topics could be so judgemental on another. Then came someone who was terrified to mention that she had gained weight after quitting drugs - again, someone who sensed that the community here would not be receptive to someone who had used cocaine, and was upset about the resulting weight gain that is common (and depressing) among recovering addicts. Then today I see this huge thread about how it's super great that McCain picked a very young, very socially conservative running mate, because wouldn't it be awesome if she ended up as prez? Yes, I would love it if another socially conservative candidate were elected to the highest office in the land. It's gone so well these past eight years (please note the sarcasm.)
So, anyways, just a rant. Feeling a little bleak here.
EDIT: I'm getting some feedback about being judgemental.. that was not my intention. The reason I rarely speak up about my political leanings is because I hate the bitter division, and senseless arguing that seems to ensue. I had just been feeling that any sort of leftie-ness 'round these parts got flamed real fast, and felt sad that the same sorts of division often occurs among the wonderful cc community. I can't say that I've ever encountered a cc'er I didn't like. You guys are all great! Just wanted to remind us all to be open minded - to both sides of the fence ![]()

Kucinich would have made an amazing president!
That man is a wacko. I've been in and around Ohio enough to know.
I thought the same thing when I first heard about him. But I did get to meet him eventually (at a presidential forum) and once you do some research on what his stance is and what he has accomplished so what if he's a little weird? That's the type of thinking that stopped him from going any further than he did. At first glance Americans thought he was too weird and wanted nothing to do with him. It's sad really.

I hate it when people try to save a baby's life. Those right wing jerks.
"Weighing in" as ultra-liberal and practically rabid environmentalist and proud of it.
I saw someone said, they were christain church goer and supported pro-choice - I was wondering what church that was since none of the christian churches I know support that veiw, just wondering. I always thought there were alot of lib.veiw on the cc but like others if it seems like the view would get out to control just stayed away from them, but that is what makes us all interesting. edit added too.
Canadian Liberal here. (Which is like, an American liberal squared!)

Okay, so I'm not the one that said that, but I wanted to add in my experience anyway. I'm a Lutheran, which is a denomination of Christianity that formed when Martin Luther got pissed at the Roman Catholic Church for its man-made rules, the sale of indulgences, its corruption, etc. I was baptized Roman Catholic but converted because I saw SO many things in that denomination that I couldn't deal with.
My church musician is a lesbian & her girlfriend is our congregational president. Our sibling congregation has a lesbian pastor. My best friend became my best friend because of all the time we spent together in youth group.... & he's gay as well.
We're not "pro-choice" persay, but we're also not "pro-life" to the point where we'd be speaking out against abortion. I've talked to my Pastor about this, & he basically said that we obviously recommend the woman to seek out adoption, but if she does ultimately choose to have an abortion, we feel that we must support her & show her love through such a difficult time.
We teach about contraception as opposed to abstinence-only sex ed like many other denominations. My pastor & his wife hate Bush & this administration with a PASSION. & our financial secretary goes to peace marches/liberal political rallies on a regular basis.
Now, my specific church is probably more liberal than even other Lutheran Churches, but as a whole, I've found that the denomination is very accepting.
There are more liberal Christians than people are aware of. The media' portrayal of "Christian" is those honk-if-you-love-jesus, if-you-do-______-you're-going-straight-to-hel l "Christians." You're not gonna find us protesting outside abortion clinics or gay marriage ceremonies, thus not many people know we exist haha.

JFK may not have been the best or worse, however he founded the Peace Corps and Medicare; he faced down the Russians when it was learned that they had missile bases in Cuba; he backed the Civil Rights movement and space exploration, although both the passage of the Civil Rights Bill and the moon landing occurred after his death.
He also was the first catholic American Irish man 2 b president. With his assignation, JFK changed the world. The birth of 24 hour news coverage began with the assignation. Lyndon Johnson was able to use the idea of JFK to force through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and begin the Great Society initiative (which ended up falling because its funding was given to Vietnam). JFK is seen as a shinning example of virtue and goodness. He is remembered as a strong, charismatic man who gave everything selflessly to the country he loved. It is that legacy that has helped America. The JFK Ideal was used to support voluntary initiatives, humanitarian aid, and human rights.
Now on the flip side, he loved women, he was in bed with the mob, became president most likely due to that fact.
JFK was no prince either, what Pres was? However for Obama to link himself arm in arm with JFK is just wrong, he is tugging at the heart strings of America, instead of looking at where we are today.
Granted no pres, senator, congressman, governor, mayor and the likes is the "perfect" man/women. However as a whole I would much rather have someone that has SOME experience in Washington. Do any of you believe that in whatever field you are in, would be given the top spot in a company after only a year or so of sitting in a board room saying ya or nay? I think that is pipe dreams, the law of the jungle is to work your way up the food chain.
Any ways, good banter is good for the people, we all live by different codes, we all must make choices. Between the candidites, it is either OK or not so OK, neither one of these guys trips my trigger, GO FRED THOMPSON! oops sorry he is out.
Some of my best enemies are good liberals, good boy, good boy, now go lay down.
Dave
ok dave..so your saying obama lacks experience.THEN EXPLAIN MCCAIN'S NEW RUNNING MATE!!! She's only been in office since 2006. I am all for a woman in the white house but that should have been hil ( sorry obama). She is pro-guns...dick cheney is also *obviously* pro guns....need I say more :)
Lets not EVEN go there, she is NOT running for the White house, Obama IS. I would much rather have some one in the seat that knows SOMETHING, teaching their right hand person, than someone in the seat LEARNING 1. as they go, and 2. from the right hand person.
On top of that, she went up against big oil, and a corrupt government in Alaska and actually CHANGED something, and what did Obama do in Ill? Oh, that's right he JOINED the corruption. If you would like the links I can provide them that prove he was in bed with the bad guys, or at the very least he was there taking the video.
I think it is totally AWESOME that she is the next VP. Fishes, hunts, snowmobiles, is a person doing real things with her family. She KNOWS what it is like to be "middle" class and go out and get what you want and actually have work for it. She made something of herself, her state and her family. Hubby actually works in the oil fields and does not ride her coat tails.
Dave the VERY happy Republican
Experience is only beneficial when it brings insight. What Obama lacks in experience (and I dont consider him lacking), he far more makes up with in judgement and vision. Combine that with the advisors he'll pick using such judgement and vision and Im certain he will be one of the best Democratic Presidents to ever serve.
McCain unfortunately cant even keep the factors straight between who's Sunni and who's Shiite with the war and has said about the economy, "I still need to be educated". These are two of the most pressing issues burdening our country so his experience does not make him currently qualified to serve.
Its one thing to be advised and another this late in the game to still need to be taught.
If you believe that Obama has "good" judgement and vision, then we are in for a world of hurt if he was to become pres (which he will not). Look at his record on WHAT he did and WHO he got involved with, that I would say is a LACK of judgement. His only vision was and is of "Whats in it for me".
Many, many countries you can not talk with, they will not listen to the USA, that is one of BHO's goals, visions, "talk". Please, I understand that the rest of world is falling apart and the bleeding hearts think we should go and sing Kumbia and all the problems of the world will go away, BULL! We have major issues right here. As the old saying goes "clean up your own house before you pass judgement on your neighbors". We have MAJOR boarder issues, (oh shame on me for saying that). All those poor ILLEGAL immigrants, they only want to work, BULL again, not all of them. They are a burden on the economy, the gov, and my pocket book. My ancestors came to this country, proud, worked hard, got there citizenship's the RIGHT way. I am a proud AMERICAN, not Irish American, not German American, not African American, not Mexican American, not Arab American and on and on. If your parents and you where born here, and the people before them became citizens the RIGHT way, then you are an AMERICAN. I refuse to speak Spanglish as the language, you move here learn to speak the language. if I travel over seas, I always learn a bit of the language so I can show respect for the people who LIVE there. If I was to attempt to move to another country, there would be so, so many restrictions on me it is not funny. The day my visa was up, they would be banging on my door.
We have issues HERE, lets clean our own house before we clean others.
These are my view points, I do not expect anyone else to understand them, but for others to respect them as they are mine.
OK, now you can blast away, I expect it.
Im just not ready for four more years of them.
Obama: "Eight is enough".

Exits stage left
sorry...I had too hahaha
This is what makes this country great, we can agree to dis-agree, and no harm no foul.
Alibsam.........
There is way to much working over there for me to get started. I have 5 friends there now, and a very good neighbor that was there 2 times. You only hear from the media (liberal) the "bad" things of anything and everything. You must speak to the men and women actually there. If it was so bad, and all was going wrong, these brave men and women would not be going back for 1-2-3-4 tours. Of course there are things that don't go right, take a look at your very own life, does everything go as planned? NO, and it will never. We are dealing with a hidden enemy for the most part, we are dealing with hundreds of years of turmoil. Do not think for a minute that I blindly accept the war, nor do I believe that this was the correct spot to go in, however we are there, and we must do a good job. We must help the people be free of a dictatorship, living in fear everyday.
Again, we must protect our back yard first, deal with the war in our own back yards, take care of our own. I would love for use to do that, but that is not happening. All things may have been different if we had delt with the imagration issue many years back. Now it has gotten out of control and we have no clue who is coming in. Take a look at the bums that took down the towers. Had our regulations been tighter, it might not have happened. But we as a country at that point said with open arms "please come to our country, we will not track you down if over stay your visa". We will not check your back ground.
Prime example is an illegal imagrent TOOK the identity of his DEAD cousin and joined the police department! HELLO, what about some checking of his back ground. Eventually he was found out, 3 years later!. So what do we do, we ship him back to Mexico! Only for him to have another opportunity to cross the boarder.
I am all for any and all who want to come and be a produictive part of this great land, but do it correctly. I must obey the laws, so shall they.
OK, so now lets all join hands, sing the COKE-A-COLA song, hit the bong, save some water and shower with a friend or two.
This is my last entry on this subject, I come here to calm myself and put my life in order, and this Ain't helping.
dave
hahahahahaha
My dad is currently overseas for it. My cousin and several friends are in Baghdad. I have another going to Afghanistan in a few months. Don't tell me to talk to people who are there. Also, what world do you live in that going over there is voluntary? My father had no option on going. Nor did anyone else I know.
It's nice that your a good sport dave. I enjoy good civilized argument every now and then.
Going back is not optional for them.
