my dad is really overweight, and his cholesterol is off the charts, high blood pressure, etc. Have any of you dealt with this? what do i do? i've asked him to come work out with me but he kind of laughs it off as if i was joking. have any of you dealt with this before? he also smokes, and i want him to quit smoking....but i have a feeling throwing all his cigarettes out isn't gonna do anything but make him mad! :D

I used to break my mom's cigarettes in half. One time she accidently burned me with one and I don't remember her ever smoking since. I'm not suggesting you set up an accident though!
Since you care about him so much, your relationship is probably pretty stong. Why not tell him that you're afraid for him, and that you don't want to walk down the aisle, graduate, have kids, some important milestone like that you don't want him to miss. I think something really heartfelt and emotional is the kind of thing that can kick him into gear and help him realize how strongly you feel about the issue.

I agree with moniepenny about finding a mile-stone or something special in the furture to look forward to. My wife smoked when we first met and by bring to her attention that her daughter wouldn't like to watch her mom have to carry an oxygen tank when ever she goes out or worse not be around at all she gave it up. It won't be easy and the person has to want to quit or it will never work. Both of my parents smoke and it is a bad/hard habit to give up! I have tried everything to get them to stop. My kids even bring up the fact about ho bad it smells when they go to grandma and grandpa's house. They even get on them and they just brush it off like it's nothing.
Worked with the wife and not so lucky with the grandparents??
Best of luck!!

Hi Missy. My husband started chewing tobacco when he was in basic training in 1994. Every time he sees the dentist they tell him he should quit, yada yada yada... never phases him. Well, we visited the oral surgeon just before Christmas because he has to have his wisdom teeth removed. That doc was finally graphic enough to scare the hell out of him. He hasn't chewed since the day before Christmas, and has no desire to begin. So, long story short, can a doctor explain things to him in such a way that he's motivated to make the change? I nagged hubby for a few years, and gave up. It was frustrating for me. I'm glad we finally met a doc who was brave enough to just lay it on the line.
