The Lovers Competition

About Us
This is a weight-loss challenge my husband and I developed as we both work to drop weight (him 50 lbs, myself 25 lbs). It is working really well for us because we're both really competitive and strong-willed. It's fun to talk trash and sneak peaks at each other's progress, as well as celebrate each other's wins. Thought we'd share it, as we're finding it really rewarding and actually--surprisingly--pretty simple.

We stay motivated and organized by posting this in wide black marker on white posterboard in our living room, as well as our score cards and our rewards for goals met.

Disclaimer:  this will not work if you do not enjoy spending time together, if you aren't able to push each other's buttons, or if you're insecure about yourself.  But if you enjoy a good relationship with a great partner, you might get a kick--and a great result--out of this!  Join this group and keep us updated--how's it going for you?  Hangups?  Even better--victories? Smile

Note:  obviously, this is tailored to us and the lifestyle we want.  You'll want to customize this for you and the lifestyle you want to pursue personally.

Also--the rewards are most powerful when you get really disciplined about where you spend money.  We refuse to reward ourselves with anything unnecessary (we monitor every purchase really prudently) but when we earn it--it's awesome and so worth it!

The Score Board  Note: points are not meant to signify sufficient daily allotments of each food group; instead, points are more generously granted for foods that are more difficult for us to choose to eat.  We love bread and meat, so since we tend towards them, they count for less.

PLUS POINTS:

  • +1 Pt for each serving of fresh vegetables (up to 5 pts/day)
  • +1 Pt for each serving of fruit (up to 3 pts/day)   Fruit Note: we only allow 1 of these servings to be juice (must be 100% juice) and no processed fruits (such as fruit cups or preserves, etc)
  • +1 Pt for each serving of whole grains (up to 3 pts/day)
  • +1 Pt for each serving of protein (up to 2 pts/day)
  • +1 Pt for each serving of dairy (up to 2 pts/day)
  • +5 Pts for consuming our full daily allotment of water (half our body weight)
  • +5 Pts for each 20 minute workout    Note: this is the only area that does not have a limit; if someone needs to make up points they can choose to work out for 40 or 60 minutes to make up ground on any given day.
  • +5 Pts for taking 20 minutes to refocus yourself, think, write goals, slow down your mind and get in control of yourself and your day   Note:  we use this time to pray and clear the mechanism...very helpful
  • +5 Pts for taking our daily multivitamins    Note: we take a multi, omega-3, and a few others...
  • +10 Pts for staying within your calorie limits for the day (he gets 2000-2100, I get 1250-1350)
MINUS POINTS:
  • (-10) Pts for each beverage containing artificial sugars or chemicals such as diet sodas or drink mixes (we are trying to work towards eating clean)
  • (-10 Pts for each dessert or processed snack item   Note: we allow each other 1 dessert per week that does not subtract points; but it DOES have to be counted towards the daily calories or counterbalanced by a workout
  • (-20) Pts for any order at any fast food restaurant  Note: we did provide a clause that if we're on the road and starving, we can order a dry garden salad and water, with a light low-calorie dressing
Each day, the maximum points any one can accumulate is 45.
Any daily score under 25 points means that person has to start over towards their reward goals
A "day" (for us) starts and ends at midnight, regardless of when we go to bed.
The Fun Part: THE REWARDS
For example, my husband's goals are (so far):
  • lose 10 pounds: new athletic shoes
  • 2 consecutive weeks of full scores: a smaller prize like a Nalgene bottle, movie night, etc
  • highest score at the end of the month:  he gets to choose a costume for me to wear to bed  (this is why I WILL NOT lose) Embarassed
  • lose 25 pounds: iPod
  • lose 35 pounds: new suit, new jeans
  • hit target weight: a tattoo  (boy will it mean something!)
Note: my goals are a bit different because I am working towards getting pregnant, so I have a different focus, but for me it is personal and no less powerful.  I don't want to be a gigantic pregnant person...so at the moment, I'm losing weight.  But when I'm pregnant it will be about monitoring a healthy weight gain and establishing really healthy eating habits for our little one.
Just starting the program?  Let us know how you customized it to suit you and what your target rewards are!
A note of caution: Be real with yourself.  There is no point in starting the competition if you're unwilling to write down your goals, points, etc.  Write them in big print and put them up.  Write your actual weight in big black letters on your wall.  Why not use all of the pressure of society to push you forward?  It's just your reality now--it's not your reality forever.  It's amazing--the people who have come in our home and seen our posters--inevitably they are inspired and encouraging.  It's such fun!
