Low Blood Pressure

Quote  |  Reply

I have had low pressure for a long time now, but in the past few months it has got a lot worse and I frequently dizziness/blackouts and in the past 2 months I've had 3 serious accidents from passing out in the morning resulting in having to go to casulty.

Well my question is, what can I do about it? Every time I go to hospital or for a doctor appointment or when I was in IP (they would check my BP 4 times a day) they would just tell me my blood pressure is very low, but nobody has ever actually told me what I can do to improve it. I'm fed up of being constantly dizzy and having these accidents.

I have blood tests done every 3 or 4 weeks (I'm recovering from anorexia so under heavy doctor supervision) and even though all my levels are predictably low, there is nothing there that could be contributing to it, eg anemia.

Any advice would really be appreciated.

What is your eating and weight like? If this is not adequate getting to a good point will maybe help these symptoms.  You said you have had your blood tested often but have they done more extensive testing for other conditions or vitamin problems? I know some people are more prone to low blood pressure but when it gets to a point where you pass out and need staples I think that is a red flag something is not right. Of course if you are not nurishing yourself this could be something that would fix it. If you are taking care I would go to another doc for a 2nd opinion

I am eating about 2200 calories a day and have gained 4 or 5 lbs but my bmi is still quite low (about 15). The blood tests have been quite extensive but maybe I should ask for more work to be done?

I don't think you need more blood-work to be done, really.   Being clinically underweight isn't just a number on the scales or a BMI it's a serious medical condition that can lead to, amongst other things, a very low BP.  The heart-muscles are under huge stress in anorexia sufferers, weakened through chronic malnutrition.   So all the time you're underweight, you'll probably experience these problems.   If they haven't told you what to do to improve matters specifically it could be because it's all tied up with you needing to gain weight.

Keep talking to the doctors.  There may be medication they can prescribe to alleviate the symptoms while you're gaining weight.  There may be dietary choices you can make.... I'm thinking about potassium-rich foods like bananas.  But I think the best thing you can do is get your intake up past 2500... and get to a healthy weight as fast as you can.  Good luck

99/66 here, but I've never experienced blackouts.

I'd ask for a second opinion from another Doc.

90/50 here and have only had blackout when my blood sugar is too low not from low blood pressure. However some members have to salt everything to keep their blood pressure up. I would also talk to a another Doc.

That is a good poitn I should mention - the 3 times I've actually passed out and had to go to hospital, my blood sugar has been low as well. However, seeing as they were all in the morning before I'd had breakfast I don't think there is anything I can do about that.

Keep something like biscuits/cookies and a flask of hot milk by the side of your bed and eat/drink something before you get up ....  seriously.
