Low blood sugar, Hypoglycemia, HELP!

Quote  |  Reply

Anyone else have frequent blood sugar attacks?  I seem to have this disorder passed down from my dad and grandparents.  If I eat sugar or have alcohol or too much caffine I am almost guaranteed to have an attack.

I would like to hear some tips from someone is successfully managing their hypoglycemia and possibly a sample meal plan.  I usually eat every two hours out of fear that if I get hungry an attack will soon follow.

You're doing the right thing in eating 'little and often'.  Check out diets based on Low GI principles as to what you should be eating the rest of the time.  Low GI diets were developed for diabetics and are designed to keep blood sugars stable with slow-release, wholegrains and othe complex carbohydrates. Combine these foods with some high quality proteins at each meal and you have a good way to keep hypoglaecemia at bay.

Thanks, I will look into that.

I like to make sure all those little snacks include protein - this seems to hold things off longer. I'm not quite hypoglycemic but do have pretty low blood sugar, but definitely low sugar, high protein snacks seem the most effective. I recommend nuts or a glass of milk with a banana, peanut butter on grain crackers or bread, yogurt with fruit (low sugar), hummus with baby carrots, and cottage cheese or other cheese. These are my personal favorites that do the job and don't make me feel all crazy within a few hours, but DO keep eating every couple of hours (I usually need to eat about every 3).

Breakfast for me might include a protein shake with banana and milk/ yogurt, hard-boiled eggs with wheat toast and peanut butter, or yogurt with granola and nuts (a higher protein breakfast really helps me out). Snacks for me are often a combination of protein with fruits and veggies (the above). Lunch is often a salad with nuts or sunflower seeds, I might water down hummus for dressing, but still a big focus on lean proteins, and dinner is often a huge serving of veggies (salad, grilled veggies, asparagus lately, green beans with toasted almonds) and a lean protein and some whole grain side - brown rice, wheat pasta, multigrain bread, potatoes or sweet potatoes, etc.

hey melliot! I am hypoglycemic and we didn't discover this until I was about 13 years old and started crying and fainting from headaches from a can of pop! So first, if you truly think you may be hypoglycemic, I would talk to your doctor to check it out and they'd give you precautions and stuff-otherwise, everyone can take steps to prevent low blood sugar! Here's what I go by: 1. eat often, it's true. I find regardless of how many meals I'm eating I have to keep something in my purse always in case I feel a dip in my sugar (fruit is best b/c it works fast!). 2-make sure you don't skimp on GOOD carbs-complex carbs literally carry you through the day, esp sweet potatoes and whole wheat bread.  3. on that note, NO white sugar! Now, there's def time for celebration and cake but if you don't have to have it, don't eat things that are basic pure sugar (ie, pop as opposed to ice cream which does have dairy and a little protein).  4. take amidday nap- reenergizes you!  Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your tips this info has been very helpful.
