Low cal alternative to white bread?
I really like having a sandwich for lunch, I find if I don't then no matter what I eat, I'll be hungry again soon after it. The problem is, everything I've looked at as an alternative to two slices of white bread (160 cals) is coming in at as high if not higher calorie wise. Anyone know of any alternatives that work as well but aren't as high calorie wise? I'm from Ireland so brand names from around the UK would be appreciated, or generic ideas of what to look for :)
I usually make my sandwiches with pita bread, I think it is usually about 90 cals per pouch.
A really low-cal alternative would be to make your sandwich into a wrap by using a large lettuce leaf.
There's a bread made by Pepperidge Farm calld Very Thin. I get the whole grain white. It has 110 calories for 3 slices. I will say that the name is true, it is VERY thin, but I think its a good alternative to regular sliced bread!
Natures Own has a sugar free bread, 100 cals for 2 slices. Whole wheat and everything. Mrs. Bairs also has a calorie light but whole wheat isn't the first ingredient, so....anyway, that has 80 cals for 2 slices. I personally don't like pitas because they always tear on me and when I want a sandwich I want bread!!! Screw a lettuce wrap (although they can be tasty!)

Go to your local grocer and look at the labels of all the breads they offer. Look for at any that say lite or reduced calorie. I can usually find a loaf that is 70 calories for 2 slices.
I only eat whole grain varieties unless I'm at a restaurant and there is fresh baked sour dough or soft rolls.
corn tortillas are pretty low calorie; there are some that are like 60 calories each or something like that, though they're pretty small.
personally, i'm a rice cake person (i know, i know i think i'm the only one who likes them). you can have a few of them and put your sandwich fillings on top, which is sort of fun. they also have "corn thins" and "multigrain cakes" and "kamut cakes" here, so maybe if you look around your local health food store they'd have a variety (here in the u.s., even regular groceries have rice cakes).
i often have toasted, open-face sandwiches (one slice of bread) or make a half-sandwich by cutting one slice in half. and i never ever eat white bread - yuck.
Aunt Millie's Whole Grain HG Fiber for Life - I buy the wheat one. Its 70 calories for 2 slices and they're about the same size as regular white sandwich bread. The texture is a little drier but other than that, I love it.
Sourdough bread, tastes and looks just like white bread but its only 40 calories per slice
Sara Lee makes white, wheat, honey wheat and multi grain breads called "Delightful" and they are just about all 2 slices for 80 calories. They don't taste that bad either!
Have you tried a "lite" english muffin?
