low cal pasta sauce, any suggestions?
I bought some whole wheat pasta and veggies the other day but I didn't know what I should use to season it or if I should use a sauce. All of the sauces seemed pretty high in calories so instead I opted for some spicy seasoned salt, however, I really am curious if there how u all prepare pastas and what sauces u guys use! hope to hear from u all! :)

Frustrated with the high calorie, high sodium sauces, I made my own. You can use fresh tomato base or no-salt tomato cans. I added a little corn starch, red wine and shreded garlic cloves. I cooked it in a large pan while adding cooked, diced onions and peppers. Then I cooked it slowly and stirred until it was thick. It was the first time I made it and it was... okay. According to this site, it's very low and calories and sodium.
I am addicted to pesto and like to make a lighter version to put on pasta and veggies:
Small amount of extra virgin olive oil, chopped clove of garlic, a few sprigs of basil and a dash of salt, all pureed together in a food processor and drizzled over the pasta.

Get yourself a large can of San Marzano crushed tomatoes...toss in a pot with one sauteed onion and 2 cloves of garlic...add any seasoning you like...let it stew for a while and pour over pasta...it's delicious and very very low in calories...you can eat a ton with no worry! Sometimes I add a bunch of raw spinach to wilt just before serving. It really is good.
I got a vegetable pasta (tomato-based) sauce at Whole Foods that's 25 cal per 1/2 cup. Quite tasty too. It was their 365 store brand so not overly expensive -- great option if there's a Whole Foods near you, I'm going to go back for more.
Tomatoe sauces can be pretty low cal. I buy an organic peri-peri sauce that is made with tomatoe and a lot of peppers and it is pretty low-cal and low sodium. Making your own would definitely be the best bet if you have the time. Pesto is good too.
Or, you could just add alot of veggies, a bit of garlic, some spices (whatever you feel like) and a touch of olive oil. also very good :)

If you like the convenience of sauce in a jar, try Ragu Light Tomato and Basil Pasta Sauce. It's not in C-C's database, but after I added it as a tagged item it gets a grade of B. 50 cals per serving, no fat, 370 mg sodium and no added sugar
I too make my own, #1 because it is WAY better and #2 because I can control the sodium in it. Canned or fresh tomatoes, garlic, seasonings and I like fresh basil added at the end. I also make my own pizza sauce by slicing grape tomatoes in half, lots of fresh garlic, oregano and a little olive oil and cook it low until the tomatoes mostly break down. Delicious.
Hunt's No Sugar Added tomato sauce - DELISH!
35 cals per half cup
35 cals per half cup
I make my own with Hunt's no salt added tomato sauce, to which I add a little garlic powder and oregano, or a little Mrs. Dash garlic and herb seasoning. It's VERY low-cal, only 30 per 1/2 cup, and has virtually no sodium. Much better than bottled sauces.
I love the Hunts sauce too! Even when I am just maintaining weight (calories around 2100 daily) I still eat it, but add a tbl of lioght butter...so yum! A sprinkle of parmesean and crushed red pepper gives it a nice kick.
