Low calorie altenative to reg. sushi!!!
OK, so I'm basically a vegetarian so I don't know if anyone else would even prefer this version of sushi to the real thing.........but anyways, I make sushi for my family on special occasions. The last time I made it however, I was almost out of calories for the day and didn't want to go over my limit from the rice in sushi. But I still wanted sushi! So here is what I did, I substituted leaves of tender Romain lettuce and spinach for the rice! Also included in the rolls were things like: A shoot of scallion onion, long carrot peels, avocado, tiny bit of fat-free cream cheese, slivers of bell peppers, zucchini, and cucumber. I mixed and matched of course, but still wrapped it in seaweed and cut it like regular restaurant sushi, so i still felt very privileged-not deprived! AND I saved a couple 100 calories!!! What do you think of this "new" low-cal sushi?

I usually just eat sashimi if I want to avoid the rice calories.
Did you use any fish in your sushi? When I have sushi, it always includes tuna and salmon .... I don't really eat the sushi with just cucumbers in them, though the avacado can be yummy.... but that's just me.

Sometimes I use home-made smoked salmon, (easy and convient because I live in Alaska). By the way, what is sashimi?
-Elisabeth aka Peter Pan!
Sashimi are essentially slices of raw fish.
Mmmmm sashimi. Aus is pretty big on it (or Sydney to pinpoint). On a platter you can expect tuna, salmon and kingfish.
I'm a pescetarian, but I still have to watch my protein levels, so once a week, it's sashimi night! I love to dip it in a mix of wasabi and soy. Edamame beans are also a really good source of protein. Great with a bit of salt.
I think the japanese diet is generally really good. It also enables my partner and i to eat out guilt free! Huzzah!
