LOW CALORIE/LOW FAT suggestions?!?
any suggestions on EASSSY meals to make? i absolutley HATE cooking!!! I'm a college student and me and cooking are NOT getting along. But i do want to make healthy meals. Any suggestions?? for meals where i dont have to run to store to buy like basil leaves and nutmeg sauce or pecan powder (yea imade those up) nothing with that crud in it. I have a fwe spices around the apartment like garlic and i dont know what else but the basic ones used alot.
i buy frozen veggies as its difficult to buy fresh ones and eat them by myself...my roomie doesnt like veggies or fruit soim screwed in that area :)
Suggestions?!??!
p.s. i dont meat from hooved animals (no pork, or beef)...i was just raised not to (i dont know why) so the thought of it now kind of grosses me out.
Get a jar of salsa and put it into a saute pan. Heat it up and put some boneless, skinless chicken breasts on top. Spoon a little salsa over the chicken. Put a lid on, turn the heat very low and simmer until the chicken is done, about 15 to 20 minutes. This is very good with rice or tortillas and a salad.
Get some steamer bags of vegetables and steam the entire bag. Put it into the refrigerator and add to soups and salads. One of the four serving bags makes 3 side dishes for me because I eat a lot of vegetables.
If you can get Boar's Head deli meats, they have quite a few that have the American Heart Association seal of approval. Lately I've been making sandwiches with Thomas' Sandwich Thins, which are the size of a mini pita but sturdier.
Hope these suggestions help.
Omelettes make great meals...I eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner! THIS is a guide to making the perfect omelette which I totally recommend... I could never do it but after following those instructions I can make the perfect omelette every time.
Hint: use egg substitute/egg beaters to make it even healthier. OR use 1 whole egg plus 2-3 egg whites. You can put anything in it you want... some nice combinations are cooked mushrooms/2 tbsp whipped cream cheese, tomatoes/onions/peppers, tomatoes/broccoli/cheese, salsa/black olives, etc.
even easier on the egg front because im in college and i have an apartment but i still do quick cooking.... in a microwavable bowl put 1/2 of egg whites or egg substitute like egg beaters mix with mushrooms, peppers, spinach and heat for 2 minutes, stir and heat for another 45 seconds. it turns out perfect everytime. i add a little salt and pepper and 2 tbsp fresh salsa, put it in a whole wheat low calorie wrap (La Tortilla Factory makes whole wheat ones for 50 calories or larger ones for 80 calories) its an awesome breakfast but i even have it for lunch or dinner. Frozen vegetables i suggest buying those ziploc steamer bags and heat up brocolli, brussel sprouts, asapargus or cauliflower.
They all sound delicious!!!! I will try them all as im really getting sick of the crud i make (whole wheat noodles with spaghetti sauce is as fancy as it gets)
The chicken/salsa thing sounds super good with tortillas :-) im HUUGE into like mexican type foods. probably reason being im tryin to loose 15 lbs :-)
Omlet ideas are great!!! dont know why i never thought of an omlet. I actually attempted to make one once and me with my genious cooking skills could not flip the darn thing over so i just ended up scrambling them. :) microwave is a good idea too (although i'm not much of a mushroom person, i will substitute another thing for it!..maybe like tomatoes). Family i babysit for makes these omlet things they call "omlet in a bag" and you just whip up eggs and put them in a ziplock bag with whatever you want (cheese, tomatoes, broccli, turkey whatever) and you put all the bags with your name on it in permanent marker in a pot of boiling water for 13 minutes and wala! omlet in a bag...and it slides right out. I thought the family was nuts cause the bag would melt. The mom told me to make omlet in a bag for lunch so i could see it...and it worked!!!
theres another easy suggestion of omlet making/making omlets fun for family!! She was on a diet when she learned that and she wanted to make it "fun" so the kids would eat it too so she didnt have to make seperate meals for them.

do you eat poultry? If so, try ground turkey sloppy joes. Buy a can of Manwich, brown your ground turkey and dump the can over it and let it simmer for a few minutes. Slap it on a whole wheat bun and there you go....it's really good and easy. Have some of your veggies on the side.
You are my kind of girl!!! I like simple 5 ingredient or less MEALS. Not each dish.
Here's some...
Bake chicken 30 minutes, pour 1/4 cup cream of mushroom soup. Serve over brown rice (uncle ben's sells brown rice for the microwave that takes 90 seconds to heat and no salt) also serve with broccoli
Grilled chicken wraps. There are sundried tomato wraps and put your favorite salad or sandwich stuff in it. These are a great change from a regular sandwich. My family absolutely LOVES these!
I use lots of Mrs. Dash seasoning. It doesn't have sodium and they have lots of variety. Like a tomato, basil one, mesquite, and lemon pepper. Gives you a different taste of meat just with the seasoning-- at least gives you the feel of something different.
Turkey chili-- Actually very easy- about as easy as spaghetti with meat sauce!!! If you have ALDI's they usually have everything there are VERY cheap. requires ground turkey, tomato sauce, kidney beans, and chili seasoning (usually in a packet). Just ground the turkey then add everything else with a bit of water (the back of the chili packet gives you the step by step).
Progresso Light Chicken Noodle is actually not too bad. The WHOLE can is 140 calories. It does have about 900mg of sodium for the whole thing, so if you need to watch your sodium more, be careful. But you can do this and still be in range of sodium- just make sure not to do this often and have lower sodium foods the other part of the day.
Also, in the veggie dept. There are bags of fresh veggies ready to throw in the microwave (the broccoli is awesome!) You can use one immediately, and save the other for the next meal (or add it to your next soup from a can for some added veggies- it'd already be cooked just heated through like the soup). Just buy only one or two bags at a time. They keep longer than fresh veggies because of the bag. Add lemon juice and parmesan to taste so you don't have the calories from butter.
Bake some chicken, then cut it in strips to use for later. Put them in ziploc freezer bags in one serving. Then just take out what you need and heat 'em up. that way you are only "cooking" every so often, then just heating food up.
Good luck and happy eating! It's worth doing!
