A snack I like which wasn't mentioned is jello and fruit.  I make my own and set it in small cups with lids so they are individual sized (I usually I get 7 small cups out of a box of jello).  My favorite is orange jello and mandarin oranges.

Scraps

This isn't a food per say, but I just read that crushing fennel seeds and smelling them when hungry helps ease the cravings that make you feel hungry.

Something I tend to do is drink hot flavored tea if I'm feeling hungry when I've had a decent meal. The hotter the better making me have to sip the drink over a longer time.

I love my breakfast.. it's sooo filling!  I use 1 cup of Southwestern Egg Beaters and mix in some sauteed red & green peppers and onion and 6 slices or deli turkey lunchmeat and topped with Salsa.. it's VERY filling! :-)

For snacks I like peanut butter celery and some dried fruit.
Radishes - Only one calorie per large radish

Basically any type of vegetable except the larger tuber variety (potatoes, carrots etc.) they're still lower in calories but you can't munch forever on them.

You can make a huge healthy salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, beans, radishes for about 200 calories.  It will fill you up allright!
Baby carrots!  Eat about 5 with a meal and I feel full afterwards.  Easy to buy and no prep at all.....my kind of snack.
Not sure on the calories but it's prettty low:

Romain Lettuce

Trader Joes precooked chicken breast

Kraft far free ranch dressing

Frank's Redhot Chili Lime Sauce (this is very mild, you can use the reg version if you like it hotter)

I take about a 1/2 cup of lettuce and put a slice of chicken diced up over the top and mix just a tiny bit of the Frank's and dressing. It's pretty filling and i'm thinking when I last checked around 50-60 calories. Also only takes about 30 seconds to make.
I was just reading what people say about soup, and that homemade is better.

I would guess that once you've seasoned the broth and all is said and done, you're going to have a decent amount of sodium in your homemade soup.

I've made homemade soup with real chicken stock and guess what - it was bland as hell!  I had to add some boullion and  you know what that is - loaded with sodium!  To me, soup is to be salty.

So what to do?

Filling foods I like that are decent in calories are yogurt and cottage cheese.  I like 'heavy' foods so that's what I usually go for.

jusat discovered this... the beans idea sound good.

i like baked cauliflower, crispbread with low fat cottage cheese, salad with hummus, yogurts..

I am a model headed to New York city. I have a few things that help me feel satisfied (for at least a little while)

-Tofu Shirataki noodles-my savior! an entire package is only 40 calories. I add them to 1/2 a can of Progresso Light or powdered soup mix (You can get them at whole foods, near the tofu)

-Sugar-Free Jello-an entire large box is only 80 calories and at least 4 cups of something to put in your tummy

-Beefsteak tomatos-I don't count these into my daily calories (along with broccoli, cauliflower, celery, green-leafy veggies, carrots, green beans) A big tomato cut up with some garlic salt and pepper is a great tide-me-over.

-Herbal tea and crystal light-drink throughout the day to avoid an empty stomach

-Nature's Path puffed kamut-kamut is a grain larger than wheat that has been used for thousands of years. 1 cup is only 50 calories. I snack on it for crunch satisfaction.

These are my emergency filler-uppers. Otherwise make sure your diet consists of proteins and fats, which are essential.

Hope this helps someone!

try canned beans - half a can of red kidneys has only 105 cals, add a bit of salsa, a spoonful of fat free greek yogurt, some lettuce and seasoning for about 150 cals - it satisfies a mexican craving - makes me less likely to order a massive burrito with guac or nachos

also 100 packs of micro popcorn and soup - I go for pre-prepared but making your own works too.

oh and i also think wholegrain pasta can be really filling - you get quite a bit for  not so many calories.  i go for spelt or kamut or wholewheat at a push.

I just found this site when I googled for low calorie snacks to munch on.  This is the first day of my diet, and while I did have fruits and veggies in the house, I know I needed something for the crunch factor.

I read through this entire thread and also the link that lead to the soups....I just love soups, but the sodium does me in since I cannot use salt anymore...I went shopping with soup on the brain...and with a few ideas from above.

I have been looking for a low sodium, low calorie broth for a little over three years with no success.  I finally found it and wanted to pass it on.  If you can't find it, perhaps you could ask the grocery to order it.

It is made by Pacific Natural Foods, and is a low sodium organic vegetable broth.

1 cup is 15 calories, 140 mg sodium, 3g carbs and -0- everything else...

I will be making one  of the soups from the link tomorrow...Thanks for the recipes!

This may sound obvious, but are you drinking enough water?

Anytime I eat, I make sure to drink at least a glass of water before I start. That way, I can't fit as much food in my stomach at one time, which prevents overeating. This way, you eat less, more often.

With that said, scallops (4 oz) are only 70 calories before cooking. Just pan-fry them in light butter/pam and garlic and you're good to go. Brown rice is another favorite of mine. You don't need much to make you full.

Anything with fiber is your new friend. It'll keep you feeling fuller longer.

EDIT: I forgot PICKLES! A huge dill pickle (NOT the bread and butter kind) usually has less than 5 cals each. And another note (although you probably already know this): avoid fast food like the plague. Even if it fits in your calorie limit for the day, it's bad news. The next day, you'll wake up hungrier than the day before. I know, because I'm in the "Day After" today. (Oops...)

fresh spinach salad.  You can eat as much as you want and the calories are sooooo low. Wink

  • Unbuttered popcorn
  • High fiber cereal with or without almond/plain milk
  • Vegetables
  • Berries or Grapes
  • Bagel or English muffin with SF jelly

Apples, potatoes, oatmeal..

Nuts really really REALLY fill me up, but they're a bit higher in calories if you don't monitor them.

i usually cut up an apple and have a couple slices every hour, it lasts me the afternoon and they are about 70 calories,   1oo calorie popcorn fills me up so i have that if im hungry, 10 calorie jellos are good when you dont want to eat too much, and crystal light popsicles are only 15 calories and they last a while

slice up an apple, spray with pam and sprinkle with cinamon.....yum

a sweet potato usually does it for me (yeah, i know, who craves a sweet potato)

how about....100 calorie kettle corn!

Heheh...I actually crave sweet potatoes, too!  I like making them into "fries" and baking them in the oven with a spritz of Pam & sprinkle of cinnamon.

Diced apple, splash of lemon juice, sprinkle of cinnamon, 1 tsp brown sugar microwaved for 2 minutes is great, too.

Air popped or 100 cal pack popcorn spritzed with buttery flavored cooking spray and sprinkled with spices (savory or sweet), Molly McButter cheese sprinkles, etc.

All Bran cereal with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.  I swear those little "twigs" grow and you end up chewing for awhile.  Keeps me full for a long time.

Lower sodium brothy/vegetable soups are good as are hot teas.

I always eat 3 cups of vegetables and that's about 100 calories and tottaly feels me up. Then I have some lean protein like 3 oz and my amazing high fiber bread to keep me full until dinnertime! Try it and you'll have a 400 calorie meal without overdosing!

I second that fruit with peanut butter.  Most peanut butters are around 30-35 calories per teaspoon, so I just stick a teaspoon in the jar and spread the pb on an apple or a banana.  You could also make a peanut butter foldover with one slice of bread and still potentially be under 100 calories.   Peanut butter is my friend....   twinmama

there is no way that your peanut butter is 30-35 calories per teaspoon.

I use Peter Pan whipped creamy and it's 140 cals for 2 tablespoons...so that would be about 24 calories per teaspoon so twinmama is right on the money for most PBs
