Any low calorie high calcium foods out there????

Quote  |  Reply

I am a 31 yr old female, I know that calcium is very important for bone strength and a lot of other things. Yes, I love ice cream, but is there a lower calorie/ lower fat option? I notice although I eat pretty well, my calcium percentage is always in the 30's or 40's (%). Suggestions?

Skim milk seems to have more calcium for fewer calories than anything else I have found. I always have a gallon in the house. I buy half & half for my cats and use skim milk & lowfat, sugar-free creamer in my coffee.

The other possibility might be plain, unsweetened, low fat yogurt (which is also good for the bacteria).

Every calcium supplement I have tried (and that would be all of them) give me incredible gastrointestinal difficulties. So I just rely on dietary calcium & check it everyday when I do the nutrition analysis.

Thank you. I suppose I could make do with that. I was hoping for some fudge covered ice cream cake that had 4 calories....then I realized I was drooling on myself! I'm glad you mentioned the calcium supplements too! I hate it when stuff messes with my stomach and that would've been my next choice!

I have read that cats are actually lactose intolerant and shouldn't drink milk...

Here's are some low calories rich in calcium:

Plain Fat Free Yogurt 1cup = 415mg of calcium

White beans 3/4 cup= 120mg

Tofu 150g= 350mg

Cabbage/Bok Choy 1/2 cup = 190mg

Turnip greens = 104mg

Broccoli 1cup = 160mg

Sardines in oil(with bones) 3oz = 370mg

Try some leafy greens like collards or kale, they are very high in calcium.

Orange juice fortified with Calcium, Broccoli, nuts and beans are all high in calcium and some healthy alternatives.

Good Luck!

A grande skinny caramel latte from Starbucks is only 130 calories and has 40% of your daily calcium.

:)

When I need to boost my calcium, I eat an extra strength Tum.

2 Tums = 10 cals = 800 mg calcium

They definately do not bother my stomach, being that's what they're supposed to help with!  (And I certainly have had my share of stomach issues)

I'm in love with fat free cheese slices.  30cals a piece, 5 grams protein, and 15% DV of calcium.  Not a ton of calcium per slice, but at 30cals a piece, you can eat quite a few of them.

Spinach (I like fresh for salads the best)

figs

dried beans and legumes
