Low Calorie/ High Protein Snacks
What are some snacks that are good sources of protein? I have yogurt, cottage cheese, and turkey slices. I need some ideas that can also be quick and portable. I have a good amount of fruits and vegetables everyday. I also fit in my whole grains, too! I just need help with the protein. I would love to just cook up some chicken or grill some halibut or salmon...but it's not always available to me. So I need some ideas for ways I could get in my protein. (By the way I'm not a fan of peanut butter or nuts). Sorry if that may decrease my options. Thanks!
have you tried edamame? soy beans? you can get them roasted (usually sold as soy nuts) they're really nice and flavoursome and pretty low cal
you can buy very small tins of tuna fish which make nice snacks
how about bacon bits, cold sausages, or bits of meat generally - you could cook a whole chicken - and take bits of it in a tub for a snack
Hey...the protein lunch crew is growing! Just take a stroll down the old tuna fish can isle and you will find new packages of salmon, other fish, and fillets even Chicken breast...ahhh yeah! It is really great stuff!!!
if you dont want portable... i usually eat 3/4 cup of egg beaters and a slice of low fat cheese for 23g of protein and 140 calories.
baby colognes soundsss pretttty good. also BEEF JERKY.
i've even recently found Turkey Jerky- 100 calorie packs. check 'em mout
i know you said you dont really have time for chicken. i dont really have any ideas on quick snacks though, i need help with that myself. But if you ever have some time at home get some chicken breast, wash it cut off the fat etc. then cut it into small pieces like square pieces and put some pam or non stick spray into a large pan and cook it in the pan. Its also good with mrs dash or garlic. (my brother was in a body building show and this is almost the only thing he could eat for a while) depending on how much you cook it can last you through the week, just put it in small baggies and take some with you to work or wherever. hope this helps.
Kylee - The 3 proteins you named are my 3 main proteins also! Those are definitely the most convenient. What about milk? I know Hood also makes a 90 calorie chocolate milk. I know eggs really aren't that convenient, but I love them scrambled and in omlets! Ohh!!! I just thought of another one. What I eat for a snack at night...pudding! The kind you make yourself. 2 servings has a cup of milk in it and approximately 140 calories. I know Special K makes a high protein cereal, around 120 calories.
If you don't have time to cook, they have Gordon's grilled fish fillets that you can easily microwave. They are only 100 calories and have a significant amount of protein (~20 grams). Light string cheese has only 60 calories and has 6 grams of protein plus calcium. It's usually difficult to find ready to eat quality protein. Boca burgers are a good idea as well.
What about Protein shake mix. :) Better with skim milk, but OK with cold water. Or, what about hard boiled eggs? :)
hard boiled eggs whites are great, also a little higher in
cals but the whole egg mixed with a little mustard is really good too!
but I have a question about those, which part of the egg has the
most protein?
Also give veggie burgers a try, I ate then alot we I didn't eat meat, now that
I do I still keep a box in the fridge, its also a low calorie exchange for hamburger
(you can buy ground) but anyway it like 70 calories for 13g of protein. You can
heat them up in the microwave.
If you're going with the canned tuna fish (or canned anything), check the sodium content. Too much sodium will make you retain water (I've been told).
Keep an eye on the sodium content on jerky or canned protein.
Yes, hard boiled eggs are great! Just add them to a salad (with your pre-made chicken breast cut into little sqares)...and you got a nice dose of protein...without all the sodium. Or, just eat one by itself. I also heard somewhere that one egg is the perfect food. Not sure what that means, but it sounds good. :)
It may sound strange but every now and then I drink a Slim Fast High Protein Shake, they only have 190 calories and 15 grams of protein, which helps keep you fuller. I also mix protein powder with plain nonfat yogurt and some fruit for a high protein/low calorie snack.
I also love to drink the Slim Fast shakes... they are delicious. But watch out for the sugar content! It's surprisingly high (which is probably why i like them so much!)
Hi Kylee,
I am also on the look out for high protein snacks for medical reasons, I need to consume around 100g protein per day. My current favourite are frozen edamame (soy) beans. I defrost half a cup full in the microwave and it gives me 15g protein. They are healthy, tasty and low fairly low in calories. Also you can buy high protein low fat/calorie turkey burgers, once cooked you can keep them in the fridge for a couple of days so they are convenient to grab when you are short on time. Tinned flaked pink salmon in water is a nice alternative to tuna. I always drain off the water or brine and mix the fish with chopped tomatoes or cucumber which makes it less dry :)
