Low-Calorie Peanut Butter?

Quote  |  Reply

I love peanut butter (as most of you here seem to, as well) but I'm often finding it difficult to fit into my diet because it's so high in calories (85 per tablespoon, eek! At least it's not as bad as regular butter). Does anyone have any suggestions for a low-calorie brand of peanut butter? I'm looking for something that I can find in grocery stores, preferably cheap. I prefer the creamy style. :)

Are you in the USA? Theres a low calorie PB called PB2 made by Bell plantation (google it). You can order it online. :)

Yes, I've seen it mentioned on this board several times. It seems a little expensive though. Plus, the idea of powdered peanut butter sort of makes my skin crawl. Does it actually taste good?

Nuts are naturally high in calories, mainly from fat. That isn't necessarily a bad thing if you eat them in moderation. I think that whatever fillers they'd put in a low-fat version of peanut butter would be worse for you, in the long run, than the calories in the real stuff.

Enjoy real peanut butter, just not too much. :-)
It's a little like asking for low-calorie olive oil.  The answer is to eat it less often and in smaller quantities.

Eat a regular peanut butter - however make sure it's a natural one.  Crazy Richards, Nature's Promise, even the Smucker's one (that has added salt, but it's still better than added salt, sugar, preservatives, etc).

There's a peanut butter + flax seed and it tastes great which is really nice but it gets rock solid and you have to keep it in the fridge and nuke it everytime.  I really wish they'd fix that because the peanut butter itself is A-MAZING.

You might want to check out Better N Peanut Butter. It's all natural with no trans or saturated fats...100 calories for 2 tbsp. I personally prefer the taste of regular peanut butter, but you might like it. The website has nutrition and a store locator.

Tristesse, what brand is the peanut butter + flaxseed?

I don't care for the Better N Peanut Butter either...I have an almost full jar now to get rid of, maybe I'll try making a chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

Thanks asftx!  It's interesting that it's only available in Walmarts in the southern half of my state....I'll have to grab some the next time I'm on a road trip.

Thanks for the tip! :)

Some people love Better'n Peanut Butter, but the stuff makes me gag. So I just use Reduced Fat Skippy (creamy). It's not quite as bad for you as the regular stuff- it has 180 calories and 12g of fat per 2 tablespoons and I can barely taste a difference from the regular version. When I have a peanut butter craving, I just put it on a Weight Watchers bagel (150 calories and .5 grams of fat). I'll eat it as breakfast or lunch, because it's filling enough that I can do that. With the weight watchers bagel (making sure I measure out no more than two tablespoons- which is plenty), the meal ends up being 330 calories and 12.5 grams of fat. That comes out to 7 weight watchers points (it would be 6 points if you didn't combine the stats).

If you think about it, that's not all that bad. I NEED peanut butter, so I'm willing to make sure my other meals for the day are very low fat so that I can get my fix. I'm 3 months into this diet and I need to give myself peanut butter in order to stick to it.

Also, for Hungry Girl's take on Better'n Peanut Butter versus reduced fat peanut butter (not Skippy's in particular), read here: http://www.hungry-girl.com/week/weeklydetails .php?isid=1205

kraft has a lite peanut butter in smooth and crunchy, but I would check the ingredients there may be a lot of fillers. You should probably invest in an natural peanut butter that has no added sugar. Smuchers has a good one.

I also thought the Better than PB was awful too...let a jar go to waste for sure, and it was pricey.
