Low carb breakfast help

Quote  |  Reply

I want to eat low carb, but I cant find anything on the internet that could be low carb and fast. Lots of sites recommend eggs and bacon, but I can only do that on weekends. Like cereal is easy and fast, but too high in carbs. Is there anything at all I could buy that has little or no carbs, but is fast for breakfast? I'm thinking it could not exist, but I thought I might ask anyways

Don't do low carb.  In the long run, it is not healthy.

Just eat the right carbs, whole grains, oatmeal, brown rice, etc.  And what you should be worrying about in the cereals is the amount of SUGARS, more than carbs.  Your body needs carbs, and if you work out, even more.  Some cereals are healthy.  Try buying Kashi cereals, like Go Lean.  It has a nice amount of protein and fiber.  And it is low in sugar, and the sugar it does have is natural.  You need carbs though.

Hmm, thanks for the reply. You see, I have milk every morning and some oatmeal. I am usually still hungry though and I thought I should be adding something else other then carbohydrates, so I don't get too much ya know? But I don't want to cook eggs, so I thought there might be a bar of some sort of prepackaged thing they sell with no carbs. I was thinking if it was even possible, but maybe not.

oh and BTW, I have bough kashi go lean crunch, and it is my favorite cereal ever. Its 200 calories a cup though lol

Good.  Keep eating your oatmeal.  It's a low GI food, which is really healthy.  If your still hungry add some fruit or some nuts.  Just measure your nuts because they are high in calories.  And don't eat any prepackaged energy or protein bars.  They're just loaded in sugar.  Eat whole foods.  And if you don't want to cook eggs, it just takes 20 minutes to boil and egg, so you can just cook that while you are eating your oatmeal, and then have your egg.  Eggs are very healthy too.

I agree that, unless you have a special medical condition, carbs are not an enemy. You breakfast definitely needs some more protein...then it should be much more filling. You could try adding some nuts/nut butter to your oatmeal/cereal, stir in some protein powder, eat some yogurt (greek yogurt has more protein than regular) or cottage cheese on the side, or boil some eggs when you do have the time, store them in the fridge, and grab one or two in the morning to eat with your whole grain carbs. :)

Have you tried egg substitute or egg whites?  they are lower in calories than whole eggs.  But whole eggs are low calorie too and new information says they are loaded with good food value.

I had a low carb breakfast this morning - 2 eggs, fresh mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and a slice of swiss cheese, with one slice of whole grain bread.

I do agree that if you are healthy carbs can be friendly.

Dixie Diner's has a bunch of low carb products, a lot of them also being low in fat. Granted, they are pricey, but it's good stuff.

Could you make hard boiled eggs on the weekend and eat them throughout the weekday?  If you get bored with plain eggs, here's an Asian recipe for tea eggs: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Chinese-Tea-Leaf -Eggs/Detail.aspx.

do eggs not work because they take too long? eggs are great- vitamins, protein... i don't have time on school mornings so i hard boil them the night before. meats come frozen and you can microwave them really quickly if you want.

i love greek yogurt in the morning. yummy yummy! if you get the unsweetened kind it's all protein and fat unless you get 0%, basically just protein. you can add cinnamon or whatever. fruit is good, but it depends on how low-carb you're going. you could try nuts.

a cheaper but similar alternative to greek yogurt is cottage cheese.

again, it depends how low-carb you want. unsweetened soy milk has something like one carb per cup, as opposed to eight or twelve or whatever (love it that i don't remember) in regular milk. you could make a shake with protein powder and peanut butter or something. i freeze some of the milk in ice trays and add that to the liquid to make it slushy. you can add fruit if you like.

some people like this, some people don't, but i use tvp (textured vegetable protein) like oatmeal. i add cinnamon and sugar (you might use artificial sweetener or just leave that out), sometimes fruit, and cook it in either water or milk. it's pretty much just protein, very low carb.

I love love love pureed pumpkin at breakfast with a poached egg on the side... For the pumpkin I just sprinkle it with cinnamon & stevia which is delicious! Plus pumpkin is incredibly healthy & energizing & pretty low in calories!

Plain Greek Yogurts, 1% Cottage Cheese w/ some SF Jelly or veggies, I recently found these microwavable egg patties (Broccoli n Cheese, Spinach and Feta and Veggie) I'll find the name and get back to you.

Special K Protein Plus or Kay Naturals Protein cereals are also a good choice w/ some 8th continent light soy or almond milk.
Hmm Sometimes Ill just microwave a mrnstr farm sausage patty and have taht with some string cheese and maybe some Scandanavian flatbreads also low carb.

Make a batch of plain, broiled chicken fingers, not fried, and eat them cold dipped in something.  I love them with a little salsa or some mustard.

is muesli good for losing weight? not a huge bowl, maybe about 4 heaped tablespoons or so? i know it's oaty and so maybe more carby, but it must be low in sugar and fat right?

for low carb you could try a small/medium bowl of bran flakes and 2 weetabix with semi-skimmed milk. to make it a bit more interesting you could add fresh fruit like chopped banana/raspberries/strawberries or a couple of slices of tinned peach/apple - tastes delicious and v. healthy :)

That oatmeal sounds very interesting. Can you buy it at the store?

And thanks everyone for your suggestions so far

Scrambled eggs are super fast (a couple minutes)--much faster than boiled. If you have a non-stick pan you don't need any added butter/oil, but even if you don't you can usually get away with less than 1/2 tsp butter/oil for frying.

If you have a blender you can make great higher-protein smoothies.  One of my favorites is:

1/4 cup dry oats--soak in boiled water overnight or for `15 min in the morning (you can skip these but it makes the smoothie yummy and thick)

1/2 skim milk

1-2 tsp whey/soy/protein powder (optional)

1/2 cup plain yogurt (I usually do fat-free)

1 tbs plain, unsweetened cocoa powder

1-2 tsp peanut butter (depending on how many cals you want)

2-3 ice cubes

i assume you're talking about the tvp? i am able to get it at my heb in the section with slow-cook oatmeal and grits and things like that. if you can find it you should experiment with different ways to make it, though. it does have a different taste that some people don't like.

Your Kashi Go Lean Crunch is a good choice, but if it doesn't fill you, try eating 1/2 - 3/4 c instead of a whole cup, and add some protien.  Some slivered almonds added to your cereal or a hard-boiled egg white (you can do the eggs in advance and have them in the fridge ready to grab).  Try to avoid the egg yolk tho -- that's where all the fat and calories are.  Another option is 1/2 c low fat cottage cheese with fresh fruit (less sugar and cals than canned); you can sprinkle some of the Go Lean cereal on top for crunch and that's really yummy!

How about this:

Cottage cheese, splenda, peanut butter, ground flaxseed.... mix and eat. Yum yum.

If you have more carbs to work with, try it with greek yoghurt, as this is also probiotic and has much more calcium.

It's also where all the nutrients, etc are!

Why would you want to do that? That is the best part of the egg!
