Ok, I need something on the go and something I can cook in the microwave/not cook at all. The past two days I've had hard boiled eggs from the dining hall and I know this fits the bill - but I really don't enjoy them. I used to eat oatmeal or cereal with fruit but I'm really trying to cut carbs and sugar so I don't know what else to eat. Any suggestions?? I was thinking about doing not traditional breakfast food like chicken breast but I don't know....I don't really eat red meat or pork, but poultry and fish are ok.

I eat yogurt with some smart bran cereal on top, not quite as easy to take with you, but it can be done. The smart bran has over 50% of your fiber for the day, so it fills you up, you don't need a full serving.

Oatmeal was a good choice.  When people talk about cutting down on 'carbs and sugar' they usually mean the less nutritious 'carbs' such as waffles or sugary breakfast cereals.   They leave in the better ones such as wholegrain toast, oatmeal and other high-fibre/low-sugar cereals.   Oatmeal is nutritious, has lots of fibre, is pretty filling and it's relatively low in calories.   And if you don't like boiled eggs why make life miserable for yourself, gagging them down?

Don't limit your options too drastically or your healthy diet can become horribly impractical.

Eggs.  You can cook them in the microwave pretty easily.

Make a yogurt parfait with fruit and nuts the night before, and eat in the morning. You could make eggs any way you like them the night before, and just reheat in the morning. Or throw some peanut butter and fruit or eggs and cheese in a low-carb tortilla to take with you.

I really see nothing wrong with oatmeal, though. If it's what has worked best for you, why not stick with what you like to eat? Especially since it's so healthy.

for sweet, try a banana and some low fat yogurt, if you're really pushed for time, just dip the banana in the pot

for savoury, a tin of tuna (in brine, not oil) is delicious and very healthy.

i love having part-skim mozarella string cheese in the morning with a banana.

or you could try a banana w/peanut butter.

or almonds or yogurt with some kind of fruit.

See, it's not working for me is the thing. I like it, but I'm overeating. Especially at night. Even when I'm not hungry. And what am I overeating on? Oatmeal.

So for a short time I'm cutting it out of my diet to reduce cravings. Everything in moderation right? And a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, an afterschool snack, and a bed time snack is not moderate.

I think I'll function better on a high protein breakfast - I'm thinking tomorrow I'm going to have one hard boiled egg, a little hummus, and an ounce of almonds. Wednesday I'm going to the cafeteria and get a veggie omlette.

Edit: I'm also going to buy a dozen eggs to cook them in the microwave since I LOVE eggs just not hard boiled

I have a great quick omelette recipe that is so delicious:

Ingredients:

.5- 1 oz. of lowfat cream cheese

one egg

1-2 tsp of dried dill

two egg whites

veggies

dash of milk (optional)

olive oil (just a sprinkle for sauteeing purposes)

Cut the cream cheese into tiny squares and set aside.

Beat together one full egg and two egg whites with some dried dill weed and a splash of milk.

Sautee vegetables in a skillet over medium heat with a little olive oil--I do everything from zucchini to mushrooms to spinach to tomatoes, peppers, onions, broccoli, etc. etc. Just do whatever you have/feel like. (One tip: I slice a bunch of veggies on Sunday so they are ready to just dump in the skillet on various mornings).

After you have sauteed the veggies for a bit, pour the egg mixture over the veggies and cover. As soon as you can, use a spatula (is this the right word? The rubber spatula thingy) to lift up sides of the eggs and let the uncooked eggs run under the sides. As soon as its fairly cooked, flip (this is hard to master. You may have to use a spatula at first, but I am an expert flipper now!)

Put the cream cheese on top of one side of the omelette. Quickly slide off the skillet onto a plate and fold over.

I put Cholula hot sauce on mine to eat and usually have half a grapefruit and sometimes one packet of oatmeal. Yes, big breakfast, but that's what works for me. The cals come from the one egg and lowfat cream cheese. The egg whites and veggies are negligible.

Have you ever tried using the laughing cow cheese instead of the lowfat cream cheese?  I'm thinking that would really be good also and might cut a couple of calories.  I'm going to try your recipe though, it sounds yummy!

1 oz of lowfat cream cheese (also called neufchatel cheese) is 74 calories. I usually dont' eat a whole ounce--more like .75 of an ounce.  I've never tried the laughing cow--is it a lot less than that? I can't stand non-fat cream cheese, but I don't eat a ton of fat during the day, so I'm fine with it--but if it saves me some calories, I'll definitely try it!

Maybe you could drink milk with your regular breakfast or have cottage cheese with some fruit.

I like low-fat cottage cheese (just plain) . . . and some brands have individual portions that you can take with you.  That with a piece of fruit or some nuts is good, cheap and quick.

DONT CUT CARBS AT BREAKFAST!!!!! you are going to mess up your metabolism...

breakfast ideas - 3 egg whites, 1 piece of toast and a banana.....or eatmeal, yogurt and strawberries....etc

you really need carbs at breakfast to kick start your metbolism....if you eat carbs at all later in the day your just going to gain weight.

I used to not eat carbs at breakfast and i was 140 pounds.  now i'm 110 and i have a bagel every morning.

by the way protein at breakfast keeps you full...but the carbs kick start your metabolism...so even think of making a breakfast sandwich with eggs and whole wheat toast...

kaila_a why is it such an awful thing not to eat carbs at breakfast if you are getting protein and good fat combination and then sufficient nutrients at 6 mini-meals?

I never eat carbs early in the morning (or much at any time, but especially not then) and I actually feel much better that way. I keep to protein and good fats, and I've got plenty of energy. Metabolism isn't suffering, either.

They're not mandatory for everyone. Skipping breakfast entirely is a bad idea, unless you're genuinely not hungry and eat a very early lunch. But a small meal focusing on protein and better fat can be just as good as a traditional higher-carb meal.

- Grilled Chicken = awesome option

- Canned Tuna, Sardines, Salmon, Mackerel, Shrimp, Oysters, Clams - what ever type of seafood floats you boat: these are easy & with the pouch/easy open packages, you can totally eat them on the go

- Canned Chicken Breast is amazingly good too! who would have thought!?

- I know you don't have an OVEN... but perhaps you can use this idea over the summer... baking egg whites in the oven: will make sort of like BREAD consistency, which is EASILY portable!

- My mom used to mix steamed spinach with some avocado in the morning, which she said helped keep her satisfied... I never tried it, so you would simply have to trust what my mom said! LOL!

- Nuts are another option, but in SMALL doses, so that might not work for you if you like to see MORE FOOD with less calories...

you should eat carbs in the morning because it's easier for your body to break them down earlier in your day.  if you eat them later on your body is more likely to convert them into fat.

I think it's like 35 calories for a wedge, so probably about the same that you are using now.  I really like it, I  put it on bagels, in tortilla roll ups, all kinds of things.
