low carb diet and bloating?

Quote  |  Reply

today is the first day i've ever made it through without carbs. i think i'm at about 70 today, which is basically unavoidable. usually i'm a pretty high carb eater- oatmeal dn whole grain breads. But today I have a really uncomfortable feeling of being bloated and my tummy is sticking out like i just ate a ton of food. I am  19, 135-140 lbs, and i am very active. Today i have had about 1800 cals so far, and i'm still gonna have a snack later. Is it normal to get bloated from eating low carb? this is miserable

I'm not sure if it's normal to get bloated after eating low carb, but I will tell you that eating low carb is not necessary if what you are going for is weight loss.  Oatmeal and whole grains are good carbs.  These are part of a balanced diet and are very much encouraged.   If you want to cut carbs, try doing it by cutting simple carbs like sugar, baked goods, white bread, white pasta, etc.

If you do something as radical as nearly eliminate an important food-group you can expect your stomach to protest at the change.  Low-carb diets are notorious for leading to constipation (the lack of fibre).... and if things are 'backing up' somewhere along the way you'd rather expect bloating.  Like putting a cork in a hosepipe.... Smile

As peaches0405 says, it's not necessary to go very low carb to achieve weight-control.  Complex carbohydrates such as wholegrains, fruits and vegetables are very important for good health.

Please rethink what you are doing. "diets" do not work. They are a temporary fix which usually result in gaining it all back or gaining even more. You need a balanced/clean diet. People get so hung up on cutting carbs and fat. You need both

People are confused with all of the low carb diets. We have been told that Carbohydrates are bad. This is not true. The human body needs carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for the body. We cannot live without them. Carbohydrates are digested by the body and converted to glucose (sugar) and used for energy. But there are different kinds of carbohydrates and understanding the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates is what is important. You want to limit your intake of simple carbohydrates and get the recommended daily allowance of complex carbohydrates.  It is best to get most of your complex carbohydrates from fresh vegetables and some fruit.

The big difference between simple and complex carbohydrates is how the body handles them during the digestion process. Complex carbohydrates are digested slowly. The body works harder to process complex carbohydrates and glucose is released more slowly into the system which is better for the body.  Your glucose levels stay at a more even keel. Most complex carbohydrates are naturally high in fiber. Diets high in fiber keep you full and satisfied longer so it just makes sense that if you eat a diet that includes more complex carbohydrates you will maintain a healthy weight because you will not be hungry again so quickly.

Simple carbohydrates are digested very fast releasing glucose very quickly which can cause glucose levels in the body to spike, which is not good. When this happens you may get a sudden burst of energy but come crashing down quickly. You will also be hungry again in a short time. Sudden spikes in glucose levels also promote weight gain and cause our bodies to store fat.

Well said, littleshellys. I agree with you 100%. You need carbs. Going a day without carbs is going to have some effed up side effects. You better rethink this.

She said she has had about 70 grams of carbs today, so she is not on a "no carb" diet.  I would assume the majority of her 70 grams have come from fruit, veggies, and/or whole grains so let us not lecture her when all she asked was about the bloating.  My first assumption when i read this was that you maybe are eating foods with sugar substitutes or sugar alcohols, which can bloat the stomach because they aren't really digestable.  That was my first thought.

^I thought that too!

I was prescribed an extremely low carb (ketogenic) diet to treat a seizure disorder & didn't experience any bloating, especially not the first day. Unless you consumed an insane amount of meat or added something new to your diet (aforementioned sugar substitutes), I'd be surprised if it were related to your diet. But if it is, obviously, change your diet.

i do have some sugar sub with my coffee but that is all. i usually eat a clean balanced diet of complex carbs- i am very into nutrition and health in general so i know what i am doing. i ate about 70 carbs, with about 25 or 30 grams of fiber and that was all in fruit and some carby veggies(carrots) and wheat bread. But i actually think now that I may have just been sick. But now i am afraid to try cutting carbs again. And i want to make it clear I am not tryint o go extreme and i only plan on ever cutting carbs for two or three days and then carboloading the next day. I wanted to try low carb just to see what would happen basically, i could use the shock to my body to give it a little jolt. I have been doing the same things(eating clean) for a year along with a- dare i say- flawless excersize program and my body must have gotten used to it by now because I can never keep at my goal body fat percentage.
