Low carb diet during pregnancy?!
What is classified as "low carb" in totals of grams or percentages (related to high glucose levels)?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ![]()
Low carb could be considered many things, but here are some low-carb food choices that I like...maybe you will too. Spaghetti squash is an amazing replacement for pasta...to up the cals you could add some healthy oils to it. Also to make smoothies you can use protein powder and almond milk instead of yogurt and then add whatever flavors you want (fruits or nut butters to up the cals.) Egg whites and egg beaters are wonderful as well. I've even heard of people making egg whites a "sweet treat" by adding cinnamon or sugar substitute to them.
Don't they make low carb breads and pastas? I'm sure the flavor isn't the same but at least you'll get fuller. I wish I had more ideas for you... I would recommend speaking to someone (hopefully the owner) of your local healthfood store to get some ideas. The smaller stores usually have owners who are willing to take the time to go over some ideas!! Good luck with the 3 hour test girl!
What did you eat right before your glucose test? How high was it? These things will factor into whether you truly have diabetes or if it was a false alarm. Also, a lot of those 'low carb' breads and stuff have artificial sweeteners and other junk that might not be good in pregnancy either. I hope you find something that works for you and is healthy for baby too.
Beware of low-carb sustitutes. They are often full of other fillers and not a healthful choice. Opt for whole wheat breads and pastas instead and lower the amount you comsume. As chacha said, replace some things... using veggies like squash and zuchini (both in season) to fill spaghetti can allow you to still have noodles, just not as many maybe. Also, go nuts with fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, protien and watch sugar intake. Artificial sweeteners are really not good for you or baby. They are no more than chemically altered sugars. Cereals and white bread are also glucose hell! Stick to whole wheat toast and eggs or cream of wheat in the morning. Avoid juices, especially orange. They are loaded with sugar too. You can do it. Your body will adapt to less carbs even if it takes a little time. Just keep filling your hunger with snacks like peanut butter and apples or something like that. Hopefully, you 3 hour test will yield better results. Good luck! ![]()
I had fasted for 7 hours prior to my glucose testing. I've been reading online that for a more accurate testing, it is recommended to fast for 8-10 hours before the test. So this time I am going to fast for 10 hours just to play it safe.

What about switching from simple carbs to complex carbs. Simple carbs like white bread, white pasta, white rice and potatoes(boiled) spike blood sugar b/c they are processed so quickly by our digestive system. Try whole wheat everything
I had GD with my pregnancy and it wasn't too bad to follow the diet they gave me. I watched the white pasta and bread no sweets of course. They always wanted me to eat a carb and a protein together. Like for snacks an apple w/peanut butter as a snack (this was a godsend I loved it), a hard cheese and crackers or peanut butter. For breakfast eggs are excellent and you can have wheat toast with it along with a breakfast meat if you want. For lunch I ate lots of salads w/chicken or beans for protein. Dinner was always a meat and veggie. Like pork chops, salad, steamed broccoli ect. I wouldn't worry too much until after your test!
Well, be sure to fast before your 3 hr test. Talk to your doc, but I wasn't suppose to eat anything for 12 hours before the test. Only water. If you eat before the test it'll screw it up!
They do have some tasty low carb stuff, like cuscus. It's just cut up pieces of pasta. Not to bad. Great with turkey or chicken.
